I have seen some T61 (non P version) with the X3100 GPU -- would our HDs fit into these models? Could you also harvest the LCD display from our T61p's and put into the T61?
Very few of the T61 with X3100 will work, if you want to send me the model and serial number for one in question (privately, don't post in forum), I can tell you if it is compatible.

TuuS helped me find a motherboard replacement, intel chipset. Replaced the motherboard without too much difficulty. Turned on the laptop, and got a garbled display. After a couple more tries, it finally booted, I booted into safe mode so I could delete the drivers and install new ones in windows.
Everything is running fine now. Thanks TuuS for your your help. I'm running an idle temp of 106 F. I did use artic silver 5.
What is everyone else's idle temp?

Would you first tell us what specific chip you are monitoring and what software you are using to get your numbers so we can all reply comparing apples with apples please. Or even a screen shot posted would be nice like this:

That temp 106f (41c) seems low, but low is good and the Intel board is known for running much cooler, but I think your idle temp will be in the low 60c range if you let it run for a while as that's about where the fan kicks in.
Glad to see you got it up and running ![]()

TuuS .... For my own sake of curiousity, which of my temps would most closely correspond to the core temp we are discussing here when looking at my HWMonitor screen shot from a couple of posts earlier? Thanks.

Your software lists the internal temps of the Intel core2 cpu as very similar to the readings this member reports. His new board doesn't have the nVidia chip so that's not an issue. It also appears that you're using software the uses the chips internal sensors. I prefer to use Thinkpad fan control (TPfancontrol.com) because it uses the sensors on the board which give a better average temp. The chips tend to have hot spots within them so you can get inaccurate readings from the internal sensors, it's also easier if everyone uses the same source if comparing temp reading.

I want to give a big shout out to TuuS.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!
TuuS got a replacement board for me and immediately had it sent to me in Japan. It took me a lot of work but the laptop is finally up and running again!

Wow this is nuts. Seems like everyone who has purchased a T61 is finally getting this problem a few years down the road. I just got mine too but fixed it with a heat gun! Bought a $8 heat gun, removed keyboard and CPU/GPU heat sink. Powered on the heat gun and directed it at the GPU for about 2 mins. Let it cool down and powered up my machine, works once again!!
And I didn't even have to bake the whole board in the oven. Nice! I was seriously on the verge of buying a new laptop but now I don't need to and can delay my purchase for another few years :-)
