If Aryeh is right, it might be interesting to fool around with a USB extension cable:

 

3 ft. USB cable A/Male to A/Female extension

Hi and thanks -

 

I guess anything is possible.  Another step that I took, though, is to attache a hub.  All the items that worked directly also worked though the hub.  All items that did not work directly did not work through the hub.
