I have a new/ old t61. reading i see that there was chatterabout SATA II drive speeds.

What is the current bios capable of. is it 3gb/s or 1.5 gb/s...

thinking of replace drive to SSD

All you'll get with an official Lenovo BIOS - regardless of version - is SATA I (1.5)

You need an unofficial, modded BIOS that is available but NOT supported by Lenovo to get SATA II (3.0) speeds.

Then, It would be help to know upside/downside to t61 running modded bios and under linux (openSUSE)  and win XPx64/ 7x64.....

The upside to running the modded bios is full SATA2 support, no whitelist to disable your computer if you use a non-lenovo branded wifi card, dual ida support, better version of slic, and optional "cntrl" "fn" key swap.

Downside on linux is the installer is windows only, so you'll need to either installed from the privided boot disc, or from a 32bit windows installation or boot disc.

I've not run into, nor heard of any other "downside"

How can I tell if the new BIOS took effect?

If you watched the utility install it, then your computer was able to boot, it's installed. If it failed, your computer would be about as useful as a brick. 

I recommend you load the bios settings, where you'll notice the bios date (I believe) is march 18th 2011. Now press "f9" key to load default settings, then make any changes you like and finally press "f10" to save and exit.

ps. you might want to check your SATA setting before you do this, if it's set to "compatibiliy mode", then you may need to change it back to that setting after you load defaults or your system may not boot.
