Hard Disk password

Hi,

I recently had my thinkpad edge stolen. I definitely set a user hard disk password however am a bit paranoid about a few things which I would like cleared up:

  1. I might have set a bios password, but if i didn't could the robber simply go into the bios and turn off the hard disk password?
  2. If the hard drive is take out of the laptop and accessed through another machine can they get access to the data even if a hard disk password has been set?

Any info would be great to put my mind at ease.

Re: Hard Disk password

1) yes if they know the password.

2) No that wouldn't work, the password need to be removed before they can access the data.

Re: Hard Disk password

Thanks for clearing that up. There is no way for them to know the user HD password and it is very complex so unlikely they will be able to guess it.

So from that perspective i think I am covered.

Was also thinking - as I only set a user password would the robber be able to set a master HD password without first inputting the user password?

Thanks,

Julian
