Hello to all,
I have in plan to buy ThinkPad Edge E520 NZ3K3SC http://www.ventex.hr/pd/0753385/pg/793/Prijenosna-
and I have question:
Can its i3 CPU be replaced with i7 Quad Core 2630QM or 2820QM?!
I will use this computer for gaming and study and Dual Core i3 is too weak.
I know that for gaming is better to buying notebook from ASUS, HP, DELL but I like ThinkPads!!
I haves 2 ThinkPads R60 & SL510 in last 6 years (with upgraded CPUs T7200 and P9500) and I be very pleased with Lenovo quality and these notebooks never made me hardware problems like Compaq and MSI notebooks which I have before ThinkPads.
My option is that Radeon 6630M with 2 GB is quite good GPU if it have support from Quad Core CPU.

Even if you could, the Quad Core would draw more power and may need to clock itself down to deal with the increased heat output. Are you sure you need the Quad Core? Games tend to benefit from higher clocks over cores, once you have two cores. If you puchase one of the E520s with the i5, then you can get turboboost for high clocks.

Yes I think about i5 2540M as second solution.
I agree with you Mate that MOST games have bigger benefit from speed rather the more cores.
But some number of games have beneficent benefit Quad Cores like Civilization 5 due the AI needs on huge maps with thousand unis for which it must made calculations.
Other games which can have benefit from quad cores is games for which CPU must made calculations from physics or it use nVidia PhysX and you don't have GeForce GPU in notebook so CPU must work on physics.
Battery autonomy isn't important to me so bigger power consumption of i7 don't be problem.

You definitely need to keep us updated if you're upgrading the CPU by yourself. I mean pictures, before, after models and etc. I'm sure a lot of Edgers would like to see how difficult or easy is this.

Sure Mate I can inform Community how pass my CPU changing in E530.
You see I finally find a buyer for my Thinkpad SL510 (CPU P9500, 4GB RAM, Intel Turbo Memory 2GB, 500GB HDD - which I will replace with smaller 320GB HDD and Radeon 4570 with 256MB) I will sell it in days after weekend and then I buy E520 + Arctic Silver 5 Thermal grease in shop and 2820QM on eBay.
So I think that I can be back here with news about SUCCESS/FAIL in next 3 weeks. If I fail I will return 2820QM to seller and replace it with i5 2540M or i7 2640M + small refund. (I hope that I will made a agreement with eBay seller about this)

Don't buy 2820QM. It has different socket and higher wattage (45W).
Go for 2640M, it's top of the line Sandy Bridge BGA-1023 model.
Check this out. Wikipedia - List of Sandy Bridge CPUs

In last two days I searched on there on community & net and learn that 3 guys changes i3/i5 CPUs with 2670QM in L520 and T420 with 2720QM there is pages about that:
1. Topic on community with same question
2. Topics on notebookreview
After I read all this things I continues with study, made search in Lenovo system parts of T420 & E520 & L520 and find that FRU Numbers of CPUs which is approved for use in both notebooks and it is SAME! :
i3-2450M FRU 04W1892
i5-2430M FRU 04W1893
i7-2620M FRU 04W0494
So I think that 2630QM/2820QM will work on E520 and I will order 2820QM (on eBay) and try!
I will keep all in touch!

Hello I Installed 2820QM Successfully.
Everything work OK. Only I have high temperature of CPU during stress test 86-90C during idle 42-46C
I my room during day is very hot, Today I read 34C on thermometer so this also can be reason for higher temperature.
I will buy cooling pad.
