S20 Memory upgrade

Hi,

I have the following:

Lenovo ThinkStation S20 Xeon W3550 Quad-Core Processor (3.06GHz 1066MHz 8MB) 4gb (2 x 2gb) udimm ddr3 1333MHz, 300GB SAS (15k) with SAS Controller Card NVIDIA Quadro 2000

I would like to add more memory, and would like to know the following:

- I have heard that its best to install memory in 3's i.e.. 2GB x 3, Is this true?

- Is it fine to mix different sizes of memory i.e.. 2GB and 4GB? Does this affect performance?

- What is the most cost effective memory at the moment is after market memory just as good? Any recommended suppliers? I have a budget of $200

1) yes it is best to install ram in a bank of three, so 3 x 2 gigs, and then 3 x 4 gigs etc.

2) Yes it is okay, but it is best to do it in triplet of similar size.

3) I use Kingston ECC ram of 4 gigs size, 6 x 4 gigs, each stick costs about 60 dollars. 2 gigs is about 24 dollars.

Lead org is pretty much dead on here....

-yes it's best to spread DIMMs out across all three channels first, then come back and fill the channels if necessary.  The performance impact if you don't fill this way is pretty small though.

-it's OK to mix densities, any performance impact in this is pretty minimal (certainly less impact than your first question regarding installing across all channels).

i got the value Ram and the more expensive KTL version of the ram, they both run okay in my S20.

I'm also thinking of buying it, it will help me a lot if you let me know how it is, thanks!
