Fails to start: Registry file failure

Hi,

When I switch on the system (T61 thinkpad 7658 model) 

It gives the following message 

Stop: C0000218 Registery file failure

The registry cannot load the hive(file):

\Systemroot\System32\Config\SAM 

It is corrupt or not writable or non existent 

It then follows with a message " dumping physical memory on to the disk" 

How do i fix this problem?
