I don't use rescue and recovery personally, but I think I can at least explain your error message.
Your recovery partiton contains a different OS then you have installed, so rescure and recover cannot use it to fix any problems or do a system restore. The only way you coud is if you did a system restore from original setup discs for the OS your using, which probably don't exist.
There may be other options within this program that can help you. I recal reading that it can image your drive and do a restore that way, but as I mentioned, I use other methods of restore so I don't have a solution for you..
There are 3rd party tools that can create restore images of your windows partiton, many use this method. My personal preferrence is to have a partition where I instal a second windows version. Doing a system restore is destructive of data and takes time, where a second OS can be accessed in a couple minutes. I also keep my windows partition small so it can be imaged and saved in a separate partition and I don't store any of my data in it, that way if I ever have to restore by reinstalling windows or re-imaging the partition, none of my data is lost, only what is in the C: drive is effected. I personally feel this is far superior to a hidden partition who's only purpose is to install windows. This data can be stored on optical discs and the harddrive space can be put to better use.

I agree that R&R 4.31 is the only apparent option. I don't quite understand why R&R 4.5 won't install, R&R 4.31 is for Windows 7 as is R&R 4.5, but it installed on my T61 which had a Vista preload.

How to "Create Recovery Disks" or otherwise backup the utilities from the hidden partition=diags?
My W510 also shipped with Vista (closeout sale :-) which my university upgraded to W7 Enterprise. I will probably have occasional use for W7, but mostly want this box to run linux. That will require repartitioning, which makes me anxious to preserve the hidden partition that Rescue and Recovery uses, and which (IIRC) contains startup ThinkVantage utilities. (When repartitining I will attempt to keep partition=diags, but there are numerous reports online of folks trying and failing to do this.) Hence I mostly wanted to create the Product Recovery DVD per ThinkWiki.
Like the OP on this thread, I also was unable to install R&R 4.5, but was able to install R&R 4.31. I then ran ThinkVantage System Update, which applied fixes to R&R but did not up-version it. After defrag, etc, I ran R&R and hit button="Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery", but only saw the option (besides ones about creating/restoring system backups) to "Create Rescue Media", which only creates the first recovery CD (but doesn't backup the utilities to DVD).
How to backup or otherwise preserve the utilities in the hidden partition, or the hidden partition itself? Other than cloning the current HD (which I am imaging now)--I would prefer a more flexible response to future problems.

It might work install you delete the preexisting PDA, and then set up the system as described on page 50, Scenario 6 of the Rescue and Recover Deployment Guide. http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals
