Dear phil5, I just wanted to say thank you for this information. I'd never heard of Win AIK and imagex.exe, and this set me on the right path.

Re: Need help with recovery partition/create recovery media

dadham, it's been a while since i've fiddled with the lenovo recovery dvds making program. but since you've mastered the lower level straightforward recovery with imagex, perhaps you'll be better off making the dvd backups yourself by copying the image and config files onto the media of your choice.

if i remeber correctly, for me the program seemed to work fine but my x120e doesn't have a dvd drive... and i didn't have any usb drives that were large enough at the time. so i just copied the recovery partition to my an external drive, as well as onto some dvds, manually, by splitting everything into a zip archive.

Re: Need help with recovery partition/create recovery media

Hey phil5,

I know this is bringing an old post back from the dead, but I just wanted to write to let you know that your posts here literally saved me a ton of a headache just now. I had loaded Windows 8 onto my machine (ThinkPad Edge E420 to be precise), and after realizing that the optical disk wasn't recognized (don't know how that happened since I used the drive to install the OS), I decided to downgrade when nothing I did fixed it.

Your posts made it easy for me to construct a list of actions I needed to do, and I dunno if you've received enough thanks for it!

For posterity's sake I'll list what I did:

Boot Ubuntu from USB.

Open "recovery.ini" file in a text editor.

Write down sizes of partitions for later.

Shutdown.

Boot from Win7 Recovery disk.

Use DISKPART application to create partitions per your instructions but with my computer's size values.

Shutdown.

Boot from Ubuntu USB (again).

Install 7zip plugin.

Extract "sdrivebackup.wim" and "cdrivebackup.wim" to their respective drives.

Shutdown.

Boot from Recovery disk (again).

Allow it to automatically repair installation and reboot.

Navigate to advanced options and open terminal.

Perform the BOOTREC.EXE commands per your instructions.

Exit out of terminal, reboot from hard-drive.

Watch as it boots!

Sorry for the long first post... I just figured there might be some desparate Windows 8 users who now want to go back, and I hadn't found a single post with everything all together. When I'd upgraded to Win8, I thought that the Lenovo recovery partition functioned exactly like that of other manufacturer's computers and could be booted to at any time. Boy was I mistaken.

Once again, thanks for the great info, phil5!

Re: Need help with recovery partition/create recovery media

Phil5. I want to thank you for your instructions on how to restore the factory os installation on my laptop. I modified your instructions to do what I needed it do without creating a WinPE thumbdrive. This required another computer since the laptop will down.

Plug the laptop drive into a computer running Windows 7

Open disk management and select the drive.

Create partition 1. Size=1199mb  FS=ntfs Label="SYSTEM_DRV" Assign=S

Create partition 2. FS=ntfs Label="Windows7_OS"

Open CMD with administrative privileges.

-------------------------------------------------------

diskpart

list disk

select disk # (# is the laptop drive)

select partition 1

active

exit

-------------------------------------------------------

Download imagex or imagex64 for Win7x64

unzip and move file to c:\windows\system32

Open CMD with administrative privileges

this assumes Q:\ is your lenovo recovery partition, S:\ is your System_Drv, X:\ is your Windows7_OS

imagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Sdrivebackup.wim 1 S:\  (Change S:\ to whatever System_DRV letter is)
imagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Cdrivebackup.wim 1 X:\ (Change X:\ to whatever Windows7_OS is)

After it's completed, put the drive back into the laptop and boot from a windows 7 disk. Do a repair startup. This should fix boot issue and restart into a fresh factory install of Lenovo's Windows 7.
