Rescue and recovery confusion

[ Edited ]

Hi I'm new to thinkpads and have a question.

From what I gather about my new laptop is that there is a hidden partition it can boot from and initiate restores. However when I ran my first back-up it wanted to make recovery media to boot from if the operating system is broken. I'm confused, isn't that what the hidden partition is for? Is the recovery media just incase my computer is so trashed the hidden partition is gone as well?

Also, I have made factory restore DVD's. If I made these do I need to make the recovery media as well?

Finally my last question is the difference between r&r and the stuff that comes from windows 7. What I gathered from what I read is that while they both let you boot and restore a disk image from an external external source; only r&r lets you save disk images directly to your main hard drive and thus in combination with the hidden partition makes it possible to restore an drive image when I'm on the road without recovery CD's or external media of any kind. Is this accurate?

When thinkvantage software seems to duplicate windows 7 services I think it would be less confusing if they articulated the differences between them. If there is any. I may be ocd though.
