System Update failure due to lack of space

I have a Thinkpad X41 with XP and Office 2007.

 

I just use as a note taker in meetings so I don't have any other programs or files on it.

 

Up until recently it worked fine, however, when I try System Update I get  an error, with the message insufficient room on harddisk.  As I have no files on the computer I have plenty of spare space with more than 40 GB available.  I have checked this many times.

 

I have unistalled and reinstalled the System Update software.  Same thing.

 

I called the Lenovo Support last year.  They hadn't heard of the problem but offered to investigate and call back.  They never did.

 

Does anyone know about this problem?
