This is likely a WMI repository problem.
To confirm download a program called WMIDiag from Microsoft, run it and check the output. If you see lots of errors,
the WMI repository is corrupted (this will later lead to windows update failures with error number 8004100A as well as I found out
)
If this is your problem, to fix:
1) stop the Windows Management Console by running services.msc.
2) Delete the contents of directory %systemroot%/windows32/wbem/repository (you can back it up if you want). Keep the empty directory!
3) Reboot. After reboot, the contents of the folder should be regenerated and SystemUpdate should work!
Hope this helps. I **finally** figured this out tonight when trying to get SP1 installed...

This also fixes any problem Vista may be having recognizing that you have a valid anti-virus/firewall running.

Hi, many many thx...my T60 is now fixed, this has tided up some other issues as well by applying the above fix.
I had to re-install System Update to get it to work properly, bit no more crazy error I first had.
Also fixed access point and location switching pb I had using Access Connection problems, I also re-installed it.

I had to make slight changes to the instructions.
Stop the Windows Management Console Windows Management Instrumentation service by running services.msc.
Delete the contents of directory %systemroot%/windows32system32/wbem/repository (you can back it up if you want). Keep the empty directory!
Reboot. After reboot, the contents of the folder should be regenerated and SystemUpdate should work!

Hi gareth:
I am having these same problems, and run Vista home premium on a T61. I have updated my bios and all my drivers and still, I get the same error message when I run update, and further, can neither get access connections nor rescue and recovery to launch.
I cannot find the directory that you reference in your post.
Instead, when I run services.msc, I get a services box with all my processes and applications, but no directories that I can "clean out."
Can you help me?
Thanks; I am so frustrated!

Thanks! Deleting the wbem directory after stopping the WIM service worked like a charm on a T400 as well.
