T61P - Power Manager causes Windows Explorer Crash After Latest Updates [ Edited ]

Hello All,

I have a T61P  ( 6457-8LU )  running Vista Ultimate 32 with all updates.

I used Thinkvantage to run all the important and optional updates including the BIOS.

The problem is when I reboot I get a hang on the Vista Desktop.

I can move the cursor ( showing busy ) but the Taskbar will not Pop Up.

I waited several minutes but it still shows busy.

If I select a Shortcut on the Desktop, after about 30 seconds, a box pops up saying Windows Explorer has failed.

If I select Restart Program, everything now works OK.

By trail and error, I determined that if I Remove Programs the latest Power Manager update this does not occur, but the Battery Gauge on the Taskbar is now gone.

I did a complete Vista reinstall using the Recovery Partition on my hard drive and the same thing occurs after the Power Manger update.  It took about 6 hours for the reinstall and updates.

If there is a fix for this I would rather do that than rebuild my hard drive from scratch again and just not update the Power Manger.

Any ideas?

Hi,

unfortunately I have to say, that I have not seen this kind of situation.
You described, that you have used ThinkVantage System Update to bring your system to top level.
Did you installed all the latest updates, that were listed?

My thinking is going more in the way that for the correct flow of Power Manager are couple other apps/drivers needed like:

Power Management driver

Hotkey driver

System Interface driver

If all these is installed, then I'm not sure, what else could cause you situation.

I know, that this is not realy the positive udpate

By using Event Viewer I see that this problem is called an Application Hang.

Other strange things present in the Event Viewer are Parallel Port failure or disabled and a Microphone Mute problem, also a tvtumon failure to load.

I reinstalled, in the following order with a reboot after each install: Power Manager Driver, System Interface Driver and Power Manager.  Still no luck.  I did not see a Hot Key driver.

I have no updates that failed to run and Device Manager shows no problems.

I don't have the Thinkpad in front of me so I don't have the exact wording from Event Viewer.

I did find that the tvtumon failure to load is a Rescue and Restore item and not a problem.

I will post further information once I am back at the Thinkpad.

OK

I rebuilt the HDD from the recovery partition, installed all the updates except Power Manager and everything works fine.  Made a backup of the HDD and then updated Power Manager.  Slightly different symptoms but Windows Explorer still hangs.

Recovered HDD from the backup and working again.

Guess I will wait for a newer Power Manager update.

One good thing, I understand Event Viewer a lot better now and I fixed a couple of other issues.

Well I updated to Windows 7 and all is well!
