Think Vantage update caused loss of files

Recent update  prompted need for backup of files on computer.  Files were directed to external Western Digital Drive that was fully erased (possibly reformatted?) without a warning by ThinkVantage back-up program.  All data apparently lost from external drive.  Data recovery may not be successful for me but programming should carry a warning about loss of all data from hard drive if this is supposed to occur.
