It's already long time ago that I had the first problems with Rescue & Recovery, but I didn't really care about it because I only used my T61 laptop very seldom. However, now I have started my studies and it's important that I can perform backups.
I just downloaded the complete installation package tvtrnr423_016gr.exe but after I started the installation the following error message showed up (I have a German Windows XP with SP3): "Fehler beim Installieren des SMI-Einheitentreibers". After that, the installation stopped.
Then I decided to first install the packages "Rescue and Recovery Cumulative WER patch for Windows XP" and "Rescue and Recovery 4.21 Cumulated Fix" which were suggested from System Update. This seemingly worked without any problem.
Then I restart the laptop - with the blue ThinkVantage button something not useful showed up - so I pressed F11 to start Rescue & Recovery. During the quick check there was a message of a corrupt file which got corrected and at the next start the Rescue & Recovery with F11 loaded completely. I tried to backup some files to an extornal USB disk drive but the drive didn't show up and I had to cancel.
After that I restarted Windows and tried to access Rescue & Recovery from the program menu, but just as before nothing happened. Also the complete reinstallation ended with the same error message as already mentioned above.
What else can I try to get Rescue & Recovery working correctly without having to reload the system with factory default values? The last successful backup is from October 2008 and I wouldn't like to lose everything that I have changed since then.

In the meantime I tried to install the older version 4.21 and tried to deinstall my current version 4.21 - both failed with the same error message. The error is also always logged in the application log of windows with Event-ID 10005 and error number 25002. As a next stell I will try to install the version 3.1 and if that fails as well, I will see what I can do by using the recovery cd that I received when I bought the laptop.

I still couldn't solve the problem.
At least I managed now from Rescue and Recovery via F11 to create a backup to an external USB drive, however it doesn't show up if I try to restore from that same backup. There are still only the old backup files from 2008 (local harddrive). On the other hand, I still can't do a backup to the local harddrive. So, it seems that for the backup the local harddrive isn't recognized while for the restore the USB drive isn't recognzed. Conclusion: Rescue and Recovery is useless like that.
Furthermore I found out that obviously I even can't performe a restore to the factory setting (hidden partition), but instead would have to use the recovery media for that.
Doesn't anyone know what might be the problem?
