Thanks, Caduceus.
Now I am disappointed about LENOVO.

No problem.
I will try to let you know if I ever do come across a solution to this problem.

I have T61 and am experiencing the same problem when I run update.
Does anyone have a solution?

Solution:
look, I have Vista installed and a runtime error message from C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\TVSU.exe, which is the Sytem Update exe.
So I run C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\Tvsukernel.exe in its directory as administrator by rightklick.

Full solution to my original problem:
I have Vista installed on a lenovo R61i and after following csparrow's instructions (thanks csparrow!) I was able to get back to the original error that caused all my troubles
I then did a search in the lenovo forums and was able to find this solution
However, when I tried to follow the solution:
I found that the LAN Settings would immediately switch back to using http://localhost:9100/proxy.pac
I then did a search for that configuration script on Google and found a thread on Google Web Accelerator.
After stopping/uninstalling GWA everything worked perfectly, and I am downloading updates right now.
So the moral of the story is uninstall Google web accelerator.
Correction uninstalling GWA allowed TVSUKernel.exe to work
but TVSU is still broken
So this "fix" is really just a workaround.

I had the same problem on an X300. I found a posting somewhere (can't find it again) that solved my problem.
Try opening
C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update
right click on tvsu.exe, select properties. Select the Compatibility tab. Click the checkbook for "Run this program in compatibility mod for" and select "windows xp (service pack 2)" from the pull down. Click OK.
Then system update should run. At least it did for me after almost a year of silently failing. Many of the updates I had missed are definite improvements.

I have the downgrade disks for the R61i. After reinstalling everything, I get a message from Lenovo system Update that says "An error occurred while trying to gather user information".
Huh? I restared and tried again. Same thing.
Any ideas?

Still unable to run system update to actually get updates from Lenovo. Seems like they have abandoned me after only 2 1/2 years with this computer.

Hi guys,
There are two ways to solve the problem:
C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update
And right click on tvsu.exe, select properties. Select the Compatibility tab. Click the checkbook for "Run this program in compatibility mod for" and select "windows xp (service pack 2)" from the pull down. Click OK.
Then system update should run.

2. Run Tvsukernel.exe under C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\. It should launch System Update.
Today I talked to a representative at Lenovo and she told me to reinstall Windows 7! Ridiculous. No offense but I doubt that she knows much about computers.
