New light on above keyboard ?

This is probably an easy one for someone, but I don't have manual with me. top-left above laptop keyboard

( where the restart button is ) there is ( to the right ) and arrow with a "1" in it.  For no reason I know,

this is suddenly illuminated whereas never seems to have beel previously.  Everything working as normal, but what is the significance of this please ?

that's the "num lock" indicator light.
