I've experienced the exact same "black hole" several times on a new T520, 1600 x 900, NVIDIA NVS-4200M, 64-bit Win7-Pro, 8GB RAM. The "hole" is a bit larger in diameter than a pencil eraser and does not seem to be a hardware problem. It may be associated with software updates (which I had plenty of after placing the T520 in service). I did not get too excited because it generally went away after rebooting. When present, if you try to move a desktop icon to that spot the "you can't do that" symbol (circle with slash) appears when the point of the cursor touches the spot. Left and right clicking on it have no effect. It has not appeared in the last few days but I'd love to know more about this mysterious apparation.

The next time the "black hole" appears I'll certainly try that procedure and let you know the results. The frequency of occurrence has dropped off dramatically since the first few days of ownership, which is what led me to surmise it was somehow connected to the initial volume of software updates. The symptoms just don't fit any plausible hardware problem, especially with the machine running very cool.
