I am a very happy owner of the Lenovo W701ds workstation laptop. So happy that it pains me that I should not be able to upgrade my machine with any similar model by Lenovo in the future. I need the large, at least 17 in screen and I need to be able to drive another 2560x1600 external monitor. I understand that Lenovo discontinued the W7** series for good. Does anybody know of any petition or any way to plead with Lenovo to reconsider?

Yes! I would immediately buy the Thinkpad W7xx model but with detachable side screen acting as tablet on its own in detachable mode and as extended screen in attached mode. I am anyhow wearing my W520 and TPT all the time with me.

I fear that won't happen. The 17" Thinkpads were an ambitious project form Lenovo, but it appears that sales didn't met expectations, and could no longer justify further uphold of the series. The total number of power users who need that kind of extensive storage options and graphics power is obviously too small. The fact that especially the W701 is almost immediately sold out when (rarely) showing up in Lenovo Outlet or eBay, does obviously not reflect general demand.
I'm personally very satisfied with my W700 and W701 and hope they will last for a along time. I wouldn't neglect a decent refresh though: Ivy Bridge, mSATA, a premium display and maybe more flexible video options (Geforce and Quadro) would be just great.

YES, BRING IT BACK!
I need a laptop with the power of a W520, but with a 17 inch screen.
Unfortunately I cannot get it from Lenovo.
The only alternatives are to get an HP Envy 17, HP EliteBook 8760w or a MacBook Pro 17 instead.

I too would love to see a return of the W700ds- series! I have one (a W700ds) and it's absolutely perfect for what I do (trading stocks and wanting the ability to move from room to room with two screens). Just out of curiosity I was looking around last night for the largest laptop screen currently available, and although Dell's Alienware makes an 18-incher, its resolution is far inferior to just the 17" screen on my W700 (not to mention the additional space available on my second screen). A company called gScreen was supposed to come out with a dual-screen laptop, but as far as I can tell it's just vaporware, and besides, nobody builds laptops with the quality that Lenovo does.
Come on, Lenovo, bring it back!

Displaylink based USB attached mobile monitors
This might interest you. Sorry, I can't bring back the W700ds.

From what I can tell, that Displaylink stuff doesn't give you the ability to sit on a couch (or in a certain room in the house that contains lots of tile and plumbing, lol) and (literally) have a dual-screen "laptop," though.
