Change W520 mic.

My previous consumer laptop had a great mic. worked perfectly. The mic. for new W520 seems to be crap, doesn't work properly for skype. Is there a way to change the mic./soundcard ? I don't mind buying a new soundcard/mic. and replacing it with the current one. Is it even possible ?

Re: Change W520 mic.

Not sure if it's feasible to replace the mic.  .  Else you could use an external mic, I have used a BT headset with my Dell, great for online presentations.

Or how about using a webcam, such as one that clips on to the screen. I would recommend a Microsoft (Q2F-00001/Q2F-00002) LifeCam Studio, 1080p HD Sensor which has an integrated hi-fi mic.  I have it on my desktop PC, works great.

It's currently on sale from Canada Computers

Re: Change W520 mic.

There're some settings that interfere with it.

Go into WIndows Sound control panel, Recording tab, double-click Internal Microphone, Enhancements tab, check Disable all enhancements. See if that helps.

Definitely this might be the thing I was looking for. So have you noticed improvement in Skype when you disable this enhancement. I was sort of sick of smart audio, I think this will disable all of its enhancement. Also has anyone tried not installing the conextant driver and just using the default windows driver that picks up the sound and mic. ?

Re: Change W520 mic.

I dunno... I don't use Skype.

It seems to work okay in MSN though; no one's complained thus far.

You might also want to hit Fn+F6 and choose multiple voices.

[ Edited ]

Yes, the mic is terrible. its a 50c part in a $2000 dollar machine. It is not suitable for skype or business conferencing. By default It makes "bwa-bwa-bwa" at the other end when you use it for skype. In the "Communications Utility" if you set the mic to "Multiple voices" when you want to use it with a single voice it helps. The speakers are appalling too - my mobile phone is louder and of similar quality.

I dont think you can change the mic, but you can change your notebook.  Anything over $400 should have a better mic & speakers.  I have to carry a second laptop with me when I need to do a skype conference.

Re: Change W520 mic.

The hardware definitely isn't bad. I can make voice recordings with it in Audacity with no issues.

The speakers are clear, but not superbly loud. It's more than enough for getting a good experience playing Battlefield 3 though.

Eos:

Honestly, I don't think the microphone - the part itself - is the problem, unless you happen to have a defective microphone on your laptop.

I use Skype all the time, without a headset (just talking at the computer, and listening to the sound via the computer speakers) and when I replaced my W500 with a new W520, a lot of people commented on how much better (clearer, no echo, etc.) I sounded.

I am going to guess that something is a bit out of whack with the software on your computer that deals with the microphone.  Perhaps you don't have the right software installed, or it is not configured properly.  I do recall that there is a setting for the W520 microphone to optomize it for a single person or for a round-table conference.  Perhaps take a careful look at your software installation (i.e. use Lenovo Update to make sure you have the appropriate drivers installed), and if that does not fix it, just take the computer in to a service depot and get them to replace the microphone for you.

Re: Change W520 mic.

Hi eos

As long as  "Listen to this device" is selected, there will be both input and output. The analogy is the same as using a microphone next to a loudspeaker.

To be frank, the driver is the issue. Driver pushes / powers the device.

Case study:

I would make a OneNote or Word Documentation of how to optimize sound in Lenovo notebooks and post it in a new thread for those who find my previous Conexant or Dolby threads too long-winded and confusing. I hope this decision would satisfy most or all of the user. :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Change W520 mic.

Again any experience with not having any audio drivers and using the windows generic driver ? Won't that work ? I think this smart audio or whatever really sucks big time. I don't know what is enabled/disabled so I've disabled all the enhancements for mic from control panel as suggested.

The performance on skype did go up but it was not as clear as my old HP consumer laptop. Well it seems I have to buy an extra mic.
