New W520 on order

[ Edited ]

Hey all,

Newcomer to Lenovo here. Considering I'm waiting on a W520 (i7-2760QM, 4GB, 2000M, 500GB 7200RPM)  and have indeed read back quite a bit on these forums, some of you are surely questioning "what's wrong with this guy?"

Simply put, Dell Precisions, HP EliteBooks, and the W520 are the only machines with the horsepower and features I seek with proper support standing behind them. I've heard questionable things about the longevity and build quality of EliteBooks, and have had a disastrous experience with Dell ProSupport/REC/two TAMs/Executive team, so Dell's off the table out of principle. That leaves our friend the W520.

An affiliate with a unit of the same spec has reported that he did originally experience the random shut-off issue and it was resolved by a motherboard swap, so that is pretty much the only reason I don't consider the design flawed beyond reasonable hope. Of course, nobody is posting to say theirs works 100%; generally only the people with issues tend to report status.

I don't have the machine yet; my order went in on the 2/10. My dock was marked as shipped this morning but the computer was one of those '4 weeks' things due to the 500GB 7200RPM HDD...we shall see what happens with it.

Anyway...that's my computer, and I'll definitely be reporting on things both positive and negative as I encounter them. Fingers crossed for a positive experience, but I know (or am told, anyway :smileyhappy: ) that Lenovo will be right there by me helping if I do happen to get one of the duds that seem to be out there.

Cheers

Hi, Kishy,

You are going to love your W520. No machine is perfect, but the W520 is a winner in my book. Yes, I do see room for improvement. Let's see what the next generation brings.

I'm certainly looking forward to it. While I rarely buy anything 'current' when it comes to technology, it was time for a step forward (my outgoing computer is a Dell Inspiron 630m, and while electronically it is still completely sound, it's not a performer), and I specifically wanted to avoid a 'new design' which the rumoured W530 would be. The W520's issues, for units that are affected, are known so I know what to look for (nevermind the new Dell I just was forced into RMA'ing by a company that had no interest in addressing my technical concerns).

Logical reasoning suggests there are W520s, a huge number of them, that have absolutely no issues. It simply isn't possible that every W520 is faulty, otherwise they wouldn't allow people to buy them and become further burdens on the support infrastructure.

Anyone know where to get detailed order status? All I see is 'released to manufacturing' in my last email, and 'in process' on the order status page.

Re: New W520 on order

Funny, I came to the W520 from a Dell 640M. It's an old warhorse, still functional, but hardly in the same league as the Lenovo. I use it as an Android device for app development (that's right, Android!).

Anyway, congrats on your purchase. I'm interested on hearing what you think once you start using it. Vavavavavoooom!!

Re: New W520 on order

I to recently ordered a w520

order placed on: 2/14/12

2760qm,4gb ram(ordered 3x4gb more from bestbuy),320gb hdd (180gb corsair gt ordered from newegg)

nvq1000m, HD+ screen ( regret not ordering the FHD now that i look bak at it), ultimate-n 6300

I have only used macs since birth, never owned a windows machine, this will be my first one.

estimated ship date is 3/5/12, to be honest with you guys I am very worried about delays after all the horror stories i read online.

I really hope that this thing gets here on time, or better yet early. Shouldn't take that long to build to be honest, especially since my order is nearly the stock config

Re: New W520 on order

Well...that tracking link was useless, because my dock showed up today, complete with gigantic 170W brick. Awesome!

Now I just need the computer.

Re: New W520 on order

kishy I really hope they get us our computers soon

i cant shake this feeling that there is something very wrong with the orders

either its going to be super delayed

or shipped with the wrong parts inside

for a computer company their order fullfilment system sucks a big one

Eh...well...I'm patient. With Dell they have 'Ships Fast' configurations that go out in 2 business days. I imagine Lenovo has this as well, but not on a CTO (custom order) system.

The hard drive you bought wasn't even available when I built mine, the minimum was 5400RPM 500GB. It has been explained to me that Lenovo has shortages of 500GB drives in both spin speeds, which is why the smaller drive became available it seems. Since I ordered a 7200RPM 500GB drive, I was warned my order could take 4 weeks, and I'm OK with that.

Such is the reality of ordering stuff that isn't available at retail.

Re: New W520 on order

when i placed my order they had these options:

320gb 7200rpm

500gb 5200rpm

500gb 7200rpm(with a notation that it wont ship until 3/15)

I honestly couldn't care less about the HDD it comes with. I already ordered a corsair force gt ssd from newegg and i'm guna put that in the day I get my laptop.

i would die if I had to wait 4 weeks for an order to come in. = )

Re: New W520 on order

Well...got my shipment notification. I find it odd that Lenovo is unable to provide me with tracking numbers that work (or indeed tracking numbers at all), but with any luck I'll have it soon :smileyhappy:
