same deal here,  ordered w520 on 4/22

i called and emailed them to make sure it will ship on 5/1 (which by itself is quite slow already) 9 days to ship, Dell really does take a lot less time.

now it's 5/3.  I got an email saying it could be within 30 days of 5/1 to ship.

not very happy about this...

Maybe you'll get a W530 instead.

Re: W-series shipping thread-2012 edition

I ordered my W520 on 4/6. It was assigned a date of 5/1. I though it was just a place holder to keep some safe time, but about a week before 5/1 the status changed to shipped. I received it on 4/30. It sounds by all the 5/1 references in other posts that there may have been a production run the third week of April.

Re: W-series shipping thread-2012 edition

That sounds about right. Best I can tell, it sounds like Lenovo waits for enough people to buy a [insert laptop here], then sends that batch to production....Judging from the shipping threads in years past, it sounds like they might also wait for the entire batch to be done before shipping all of them. UPS then breaks down the batch in KY after it clears customs.

If they are selling like hotcakes, then people don't have to wait long. If not, there is probably a minimum production run, say once a month. This might explain why some of us who place orders right after a production run have to wait so long. It would also explain why they can't give us a hard shipping date...They don't know when all of the production slots in the batch will be sold.

In truth, Lenovo could say from the get go that the laptop will be shipped within the next N days, where N = days until the next production run (assuming no more W520s are sold). This would represent a worst case scenario, but they might have happier customers if they beat their estimates.... Of course, they can't do this because who's going to buy a laptop that has an estimated ship date 3-4 weeks away? So, they split the difference and always list it as 10 days.

This may not be true, its just a guess....

As for my case, after I got the same "sometime in the next 30 days" email, I gave Lenovo CS one last chance to give me a hard ship date, and they couldn't. I put in a request to cancel my order (more difficult than it should have been). Despite what the OP says, the CS rep said that it can take 3-5 biz days to cancel the order, and its "not a guaranteed process." In the process he offered to try and get me a ship date by escalating it, in an effort to have an answer in 1-2 biz days.

This morning I placed an order for a preconfigured W520 from an Amazon reseller...Its already shipped!

I ordered an additional W520 from the web-site quick-pick sale on 5/14, shipped on 5/17. I modified the configuration to include the color sensor, 6305 AGN card and FPR. No UPS tracking number yet, but it's probably in KY by now.:smileyhappy:

All up and running. I installed the Lenovo Thinkvantage Toolbox from my other system. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Chrome was being offered as the default browser. Also, my upgraded warranty was already applied (no waiting for weeks as I had to do previously). BIOS level was 1.36 so I updated it to 1.37, installed an additional 8gb of memory left over from the other system. There were a couple of physical improvements that I noticed as well. In particular, the screws holding the keyboard were not excessively torqued, so removing the keyboard went smoothy. The speaker wires were properly routed away from the fan assembly and the DIMM door was properly in contact with the EMI mesh. No static issues at all.

I'm a happy camper!

Here are the specs for the new system:
