I have a W500 with Windows 7 x64 Professional.
Is there any small program to effect switching between discrete (ATI) and power saving (Intel) graphics other than through Power Manager?

You'd need it installed. You don't necessarily have to use the Power Manager's tools though.
"C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\Utilities\PWMUIAux.exe" /HighPerformanceGpu /ShowDialog
and
"C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\Utilities\PWMUIAux.exe" /EnergySavingGpu /ShowDialog
Will both switch the graphics card without using the battery tray icon.
Not sure if just having the PWMUIAux.exe by itself will work.

Thank you, Colonel for your quick reply. I have tried your suggestion using a shortcut based on what you posted and other than a brief running (as admin) of C:\ProgramFiles\ThinkPad\Utilities\PWMUI
there is no change in video chip nor any dialog displayed. I still have Lenovo Powermanager installed.
Does Powermanager need to be removed? Am I missing something?
Thank you again for your help.
