W500 - cannot find non-broadcasting WiFi

My wifi at both my office and at home do not broadcast the ssid.  I have the networks set up as preferred networks, yet the machine will not connect to them for 15-20 minutes after booting and/or getting into the area of the network.  Eventually they find the network, but it takes way to long.  I have the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5300.
