Can you confirm that sleep mode (that is, put the computer to sleep AND wake it up) works when having the BIOS Security Chip turned off? (In BIOS, enter "security", then "Security chip", it has to be set to "INACTIVE" )
It is turned off by default when you get your computer. If you have never used the security software from Lenovo (it gives you the option to turn it on and restart the computer) then it is still turned off.

As Frensel (http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=W_ThinkPads&view=by_date_ascending&message.id=60...) noted, the problem is probably a faulty motherboard and I'm trying to verify this. I'm inclined to this it is.
