W510 wont detect 16GB RAM

Hi I purchased Thinkpad W510 about a month ago and then I have upgraded memory to 16GB. My Laptop only detects 8GB RAM.I have tried switching the RAM but it only detects the RAM under the keyboard slots. It wont detect the RAM which is at the back.

My Ram is DDR3 - 1333 - PC3 - 10600 . I have 4 X 4 GB module.

Am I missing anything or is there anything I need to configure to make it happen?

Thanks for any help.

Regards

Amit

[ Edited ]

Ok. Fixed. :smileytongue:

Needed to install memory in specific order.

Opened a ticket with Technical Support and they guided me to the article. I do not have the link right now as they asked me to google specific serial number.

I will udpate if I can find the article again.

What I love most about this, is that when you order a W510 with 2x2GB, they install them in slot 0 and 2 -- against their own freaking recommendations.

Re: W510 wont detect 16GB RAM

I dont understand how this helped. The article talks about placing the modules based on size. As you have 4 * 4GB modules how does the order in which they are populated affect the ability of the system to see them. The only thing I can think of is that the modules might be matched pairs and they have to be populated as described in the link. Did you have to change the order around?

I'm having the same problem with 4 * 4GB modules from crucial but haven't found an answer yet.

Re: W510 wont detect 16GB RAM

Resolved the issue by removing the original working 8GB under keyboard which then caused the new 8GB installed under the laptop to produce a POST error beep sequence 1 3 3 1 which indictaed a DIMM problem. Re-seated the new memory and it all burst back into life. Re-installed the original 8GB of memory again and lo and behold I now have 16GB of memory.

Odd that the memory would only error during POST without the original memory installed.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

What is 7 character product number of your ThinkPad? It looks like 2668-KHU and can be found on the back sticker.

As for your problem, did you try following the tip from lenovo? http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-75886

Look at the picture in above link and tell us regarding the RAM's capacity installed in Slot0, 1, 2, 3 and 4?

Keep us posted.

Re: W510 wont detect 16GB RAM

Hello
It is one 4318CTR
The procedure of the builder(manufacturer) does not work.
The computer detects only the slot 0 and 2
And when I puts on the slot 1 and 3 the made computer a BEEP
