I may be able to purchase a W520 at an affordable (to me) price that has an i7 2760 QM processor. The machine comes with 32gb of ram, much more than I currently need but the future could include some CAD applications. My question is this; will this processor be able to utilize all of the ram or will it be wasted?

Yes. The system can address all 32GB of RAM when using a 64 bit OS. However, you will likely never use more than 8GB unless you are running some virtual machines.
Considering you can buy 32GB of RAM for a W520 at about $200, I hope you are getting the system for a terrific deal.

The chipset in the W520 will address ALL 32GB of memory, so long as you are using a 64-bit OS. I use 32GB in my W520 as I use a lot ov vm's and each uses 4-8gb... Enjoy it.
