W520 - No microphone jack

I recently purchased a new W520 laptop and was trying to plug in my headset with built in microphone for using skype.  My old thinkpad T500 had two audio jacks, one for headphones/speakers and one for a microphone, right on the front.  My headset also has 2 3.5 mm jacks.  The new W520 only has a single audio jack with a picture of a headset with microphone above it.  How can I plug my headset in?  Do I need a different type of headset, or is there some kind of joining adapter I can get that will allow me to plug in a my dual jack headset to the laptop?

Will this do what I need or is this only for combining two audio signals of the same type (i.e. 2 input or 2 output, not one input and one output)

Re: W520 - No microphone jack

Hi calculate, and welcome to the Lenovo Community!

That won't work :-(. It's just a Y splitter, and only a three-conductor splitter at that.

Check this knowledge base for adapters community members have found:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Audio-combo-jack-vs-headphone-earphone-with...

Alex1945 recently found one here:

http://www.everbatim.net/store/index.php/hardware/microphones-audio/headphone-microphone-jack-splitt...

And there are others mention in the related threads.

Hope this helps!

[ Edited ]

I'm considering buying this Headset Buddy ($15) splitter.  The neat thing about this splitter is that my Windows Phone 7 (and my work BlackBerry) both have 3.5mm headset plugs, so I'll be able to use my nice PC headset on my phones as well (hopefully).

Re: W520 - No microphone jack

Hey guys,

I have some issues with this new combinded mic/headphone jack:

I've bought this one here: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0052WFFIS/ref=oss_product

which seems the wright one cause it has 4 conctact sections on the plug...

but i only hear the sound on the right ear and the mic is not working either.

can anyone tell mit the right positions of ground/sound-left/sound-right/mic of the 4 sections?

thanx,

Soko

Re: W520 - No microphone jack

I got the same problem as soko11: I connected my headset to my laptop (it's a stock nokia headset, by the way), and I only hear really distorted audio: furthermore, the 'external microphone' in the Recording Devices panel of windows, it shows up as not connected. Help! I really want to use a mic on this laptop someday, but I don't feel like buying one of those splitter thingies if I can't be sure it works.

Re: W520 - No microphone jack

Hi s119349

Unfortunately I don't have a simple solution for you...

I bought a couple of these splitters and no one of these worked :smileysad:

So I had no other chance than cut one splitters cable and find out by try and error which wire of the plug of the W520 has to be soldered to which part of the mic/speaker jacks.

So I build my own working splitter. More bad news: I didn't know anymore the right connections of the plug and the jacks!

But I remember it was a real hassle so I decided to open up my splitter again and look for the right connections:

side plugged into w520: w1, w2, w3, w4 (starting from tip of plug)
mic jack: mg (ground), ms1 (stereo1), ms2 (stereo2)
speaker jack: sg (ground), ss1 (stereo1), ss2 (stereo2)

w1 => ss2/ss1 (don't know but it just changes stereo channels)
w2 => ss1/ss2 (don't know but it just changes stereo channels)
w3 => mg + sg (conntect to both!)
w4 => ms1 + ms2 (connect to both!)

If you get an adapter with this connections it will work - or build your own one as I did

good luck
