W520 Upgrades - Need Advice!

[ Edited ]

Two Questions:

1)I currently have 2x4GB OEM installed and want to add 2x4GB but am unsure the safest route to take.  In the past I've always used crucial but I'm open to all suggestions.  I could just go straight from lenovo at two times the cost but I'd rather save cash for some SSD goodness.

2)I've pretty much narrowed it down to Crucial M4, Samsung 830, and OCZ Vertex 4 add 128GB or 256GB drives.  With respect to the load it will be under (multiple instances of VS2010, MSSql Server Express, and Adobe CS5/6) any thoughts which might be best for the job?  Crucial M4 seems to be a bit long in the tooth, samsung seems to be stable but slower, and Vertex 4 is the new kid on the block with crazy speed but low 4k...

HELP!

Re: W520 Upgrades - Need Advice!

I could be wrong as I'm new to Thinkpads etc and if I'm wrong someone please correct me.

I've read that the 32GB capabilities of the W520 were only available as special order whereby the additional 2 slots (of the 4) were actually soldered? However the standard models were only able to go to 16GB, which would mean that two slots are all you have to work with.

If that is indeed the case then you don't have to worry about mixing/matching RAM sticks and just get a matching pair of 8GB sticks.

As for SSDs I have used the 256GB Samsung 830 and it gets some great reviews.
In the UK at least I believe Dabs are doing a deal on the 256GB Crucial SSD to get it for £160 with a voucher code.
I have a Vertex3 and I don't really rate it with it being a SF controller but the Vertex4 has ditched that completely but I can't really verify the quality/speeds of the drives.
I think the Vertex3 fiasco with poor performance and BSODs etc will have cost them customers for future sales.

Re: W520 Upgrades - Need Advice!

Thank you for the reply!

I'm looking into sodimm slot comment as we speak.  I know if the tp has a dual-core cpu then only two slots are used but haven't heard anything about two slots being unuseable on the quad-core models.

I almost pulled the trigger on the Vertex3 twice but was gun shy and aborted.  The Vertex4 was thrown into the mix because of the recent price drop here in the states but being so new I'm waiting for someone to run through it before I do.

Re: W520 Upgrades - Need Advice!

I'm currently looking to upgrade my W510 to 16GB and looking at Corsair Vengeance RAM but I don't know if it will be recognised in the Thinkpad. They make a 2x8GB set also which might suit you for your W520. I will be going for the 4GBx4 option obviously.

Re: W520 Upgrades - Need Advice!

If possible I'd like to just go with basic memory DDR3 10600 (matching the oem specs) and save the cash for an ultrabay and ssd.  I don't know how much improvement I'll see with DDR 12800 (2x cost) or 15000 (3x cost) so it's hard to justify...

Trying to decide on the SSD sucks...the Vertex4 is sooooo tempting and the M4 makes me feel and warm and fuzzy.

Re: W520 Upgrades - Need Advice!

Well actually the one's I'm looking at there's maybe only a slight difference in price from Crucial to Corsair Vengeance.
Although the Crucial is roughly £90 for 2x8GB and maybe £104 here for Corsair Vengeance.

Maybe you need to find a cheaper place online??

Re: W520 Upgrades - Need Advice!

I should add that when I purchased the Vertex3 120GB model the reviews of the 240GB model seemed to point out that it was vastly faster in general than the 120GB, which after forking out £220 last year for it made me a bit annoyed. I would have expected similar performance regardless of capacity.

This might be a consideration when you are contemplating 128/256 models.

Re: W520 Upgrades - Need Advice!

I have 16gb of ram (4x4gb sticks) in my w520. Got it from the factory with only 4gb. The W520 is good to 32gb with 8gb ram modules. All four slots are operational on all the quad core models.

Well that's good to know. Thanks for verifying that.

Re: W520 Upgrades - Need Advice!

Just purchased 8GB kit of Corsair Vengeance for $50!  Now to settle on the SSD, I'm really leaning towards a 256GB M4.  I'll update after installing the chips and putting it through the ringer.
