Hello:
After several issues with a Mushkin Chronos DX 480GB I finally returned it.
Now I'm thinking in buying a Samsung 830 512GB SSD and it a 7mm disk, my question is if it's necessary to buy the notebook kit or not of this disk.
Without notebook kit:

With notebook kit

Thanks in advance.

It's only an adaptor anyway and the price is the same so give it a go anyway.
If you don't need it you don't have to use it.

Hello alphaman, here in Europe the price difference is about 50 euros.
That adaptor its needed for the W520 ??.

I've no idea if it is needed.
Although aren't most SSDs 7mm and I don't seem to remember anyone whom I've known to upgrade SSD in any laptop having any problems.

The "spacer" is needed in the W520 if you install it in the primary drive bay. The rubber rails are sized for the 9.5mm drive if you initially received the 500gb HDD (the 320gb HDD is 7mm so no spacer is required). The Samsung SSD is first mounted on the drive carrier, then the spacer is placed on top of the SSD, then the rubber rails are placed on either side. The cobination fits snugly in the drive bay.
I recommend the Newmodeus HDD caddy if you are going to use the former HDD in the UltraBay. That caddy does not require the carrier and comes with all needed screws to secure the drive.

I dropped my Samsung Series 830 256GB in a regular Lenovo drive wrapper for a standard 9.5mm drive and had no issues adding the rubber rails around it and using it in a T420. The W520 should be no problem.
The Samsung 7mm drive fits in the Lenovo wrapper without issue.

You'll definitely enjoy the Samsung 830 SSD. The read/write speeds are just amazing with its use of the Sata III interface. My PCMARK7 score went from 3977 to 4378!
I removed my Intel 310 80gb mSata drive which I had installed since 7/11. The system is so much snappier that it's just hard to describe. I purchased the 512gb unit at a relatively low price. The 256gb units seem to be running around $299 or so.
