W520 - various SSD issues

Well, I enabled HD password in BIOS (for user only), I manually entered my password starting up and no problems.

Any other combo of password options I should test/try? i figure if it's going to brick, it might as well brick now then later while I still have my original HD up to date ;-)

I'll give the LPM registry edit a try to see what happens.

Is that the Thinkpad BIOS version? 1.06 sound really old since mine is 1.22.

Edit: I can see that Lenovo skipped several versions so they went from 1.06 to 1.21 and then to 1.22. So maybe 1.06 isn't as old as it sounds

It would be interesting if you see if the HDD password is accepted during a warm boot (unless you already tried this). Because it seems like the Intel 510 and HDD password that is not accepted is during a warm boot and not cold boot.

It would also be interesting to know if you use BIOS or UEFI mode in BIOS. In case of both which one is set as the first one in BIOS (UEFI or BIOS)?

Yes it's the Thinkpad BIOS version 1.06. Am i missing something?

Here are update on Crucial M4 SSD installed on W520.

I applied the LPM registry tweaks and rebooted, 

i did not encounter two temporary freezes/stalls lasting 90 seconds each. There are no IASTOR error messages since the reboot. Last IASTOR error in event viewer was at 7:35pm. Right now it's 8:14pm.

I also realized before reboot I was creating a text file to keep a log of system changes/notes so I can review the thing  i did later , and I realzed before I update LPM registry entries new file creation and new folder creation was taking 15-20 seconds.

After reboot since LPM update it's instant as it used to be.

I also reran AS DISK test below are the recent benchmark for what ever they're worth:

I did not have password enabled for REBOOT. It was only enabled for cold start.

I went back to BIOS and enforced harddisk password for both reboot and cold start.

After that I started the system and REBOOTED (warm) and it asked me the finger scan, after the swipe of finger system continued to boot as expected.

So, Harddisk password on Crucial M4 SSD works fine with Thinkpad W520.

Bios is set to UEFI, startup option is set to BOTH (Legacy and UEFI)

startup priority is set to Legacy first.

After LPM registry fix since this evening I haven't encountered any problems with the disk (although still too early to say)

Maybe Crucial did learn a lesson or two from their previous generation C300 SSD.

We have reviewed several cases of unexpected quirks when using generic OEM SSD devices. While OEM drives with standard interfaces may work on Lenovo products, Lenovo has established, tested, and is prepared to fully support a number of Lenovo offered SSD drives. While I would encourage us to continue to discuss experiences here and share any solutions developed in the community or that may become available from engineering in the future, we are not able to formally escalate complications with 3rd party drives as they are not officially supported.
