Re: W520 - various SSD issues

To all...

I also just installed a Crucial SSD M4, and everything seems to be running very smooth (I just did a clone and swap, and that's it).  No hic-ups or anything of the sort people have been writting about...

I ended up replacing the 160 Intel 320 with the Crucial M4 as my primary, and then I now use the Intel as a secondary in the drivebay.  If people are looking at doing the same, then beware that the drivebay adapter that Lenovo sells leaves a gap (from forums I have read).  This drivebay fit like a glove for me though: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005QIB8ZW/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details).

Cheers,

>>B

Re: W520 - various SSD issues

Hi,

Does anyone it's using the new Intel 520 SSD series with the W520 laptop?

I'm getting lot's of errors when I install the SSD in the hdd bay (in the dvd-bay with the caddy it works well):

Also, I had a 510 unit installed there and it was working very nicely... My bios is the latest (1.36), I'm hoping may be lenovo have a nightly build or something?

Re: W520 - various SSD issues

I'm using the Intel 520 on my W520.

You need to install the latest Intel RST driver.

Re: W520 - various SSD issues

Hi,

Have you experienced any problems with your Intel 520 sometimes pausing an extra 10 seconds on the "Starting Windows" or hanging from hibernation? Also, did you do a fresh install? (Yeah I know you shouldn't hibernate on an SSD).

My cold boot time on the Intel 520 is normally 20 secs.

Re: W520 - various SSD issues

[ Edited ]

Since I saw this "unable to change the SSD password on both my W510 and W520" running current BIOSes, I am posting a link here which should be reviewed by anyone using SSD in Thinkpads as this appears to be a MAIN Thread.

Be warned.

Setting the Thinkpad's BIOS Security to use passPHRASE (longer), whether done specifically or perhaps during a default or BIOS upgrade can render you unable to change or remove the SDD's drive password with the current BIOSes.

Effectively, you cannot move the SSD to a new machine or use it in any other capacity.

This appears to me to be a serious flaw in the BIOS when used with SSDs from various manufacturers.  I can confirm for sure it almost bricked a Crucial C300.  And no, the tricks about removing the drive etc, did not work.

Details are on my posting in the link below:

--> http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Can-t-remove-HDD-password/td-p/241538/highligh...

I've opened a ticket with Lenovo but I'm not holding my breath.  Not sure what else to do to get their attention!

Later.

Re: W520 - various SSD issues

I have had LOTS of issues with my brand new W520 with an Intel 520 SSD installed. See some of my other posts:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Please-help-Major-problems-performance-and-loc...

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W520-support-for-SATA-III-or-6GB-with-Vertex-...

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W520-and-SSD-upgrade-issues/m-p/700777/highlig...

Basically this machine is brand new (purchased mid-May 2012) and I've had nothing but issues after install the Intel 520 SSD. I've had issues with frequent "hangs", long boot times, periodic lockups, and SATA II performance (with a SATA III drive) and have spent countless hours troubleshooting the issues (see my other postings for details). Now I'm hearing that there may be compatibility issues with the W520 and the Intel 520 SSD...can anyone here confirm this?

I also suspect there are quite a few people out there that have SATA III drives that are actually running at SATA II speeds. Anyone new to an SSD (switching for a spindle drive) would likely overlook this since even a SATA II SSD performs significantly faster than a spindle drive.

Any comments/feedback would be appreciated.

The Intel RST console confirms that my Samsung 830 512gb SSD is running at 6gbs. Other tools show Read/Write transfers of 450/360 consistently:

I've been using my Intel 510 SSD in RAID 0 for a year now and it is holding up quite well, even without TRIM and the fact that it is now 85% full.

Here is my W520 with a 180GB Intel 520 SSD installed in the ultrabay adapter.
