Says who? The stock fan will handle with ease in an air conditioned office.
Nobody is mad here, and nobody wants a gaming laptop.
Lenovo don't need fanboys defending them on this forum. Just don't sell an extreme edition CPU and lock everything to a point where even a modest 5% OC is not possible.
I agree I am working on a fix for that. See if I can find an unlocked bios. the xm cpu is pretty much useless.

I've jumped in now
Got a 2960XM off eBay. It works alright on my W520 but I know it *can* go much faster than this!

I got the PCMark Vantage score of 16481 and the PCMark 7 score of 4479. The machine is in optimus mode. Its full specification is
ThinkPad W520 (4270-CTO) Core i7-2960XM 2.7/3.7 GHz | 16GB G.Skill DDR3 PC3-10666
256GB Crucial M4 & 256GB Crucial C300 RealSSD's | Ultrabay Blu-ray Burner
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 | Ericsson F5521gw WWAN | NVIDIA Quadro 2000M
15.6" FHD 1920x1080 | ThinkPad Battery 55++ (9-cell) & Battery 27++ (9-cell slice)
I'm not familiar with PCMark so I really have no idea on the scores. Comments please! Someone on NotebookReview.com mentioned that my score is lower than his W520 + 2820QM + dual-SSD in RAID 0.
My Geekbench score is 12110 though.

@huberth,
Do you use 4GB Kingston HyperX PnP DDR3-1600 sticks? Do you have any problem stress testing the RAM? A local vendor offerred me to test his 4GB G.Skill DDR3-1600 sticks. It was not stable and the machine always shutdown (i.e., crashed) during Lenovo's System Health and Diagnostics Memory Stress Test.

Yes, I use 4X4GB Kingston HyperX PnP DDR3 1600MHz.
Works fine with Lenovo Stress Test.

Got it! I had a chance to test 2x4GB Kingston HyperX PnP DDR3-1600 *and* 2x4GB of the DDR3-1866 one. The results are posted at http://www.thaithinkpad.com/forum/index.php/topic,

Anyone been able to find an unlocked bios?
Or able to overclock the W520 29xx cpus?
