Where is the optical/SPDIF/Stereo out on the W520?

There is only one 3.5mm socket on my £2000 W520.  The symbol shows headphones with microphone, which implies that its mono + mic.

I need to hook the laptop up to my 5.1 surround system for video-audio editing.  After all the 16:9 screen format is only good for gaming and movies - its painful for editing documents, browsing web or even editing phtotos.

Ive checked the specificatoin pdf, and it makes no mention of audio in/out.

Even my netbook has stereo out, and all my other laptops have optical out which supports spdif.

Any ideas?  It must have at least stereo out.

W520, i7-2720QM, Quadro 2000M, 16GB 1333, 1080p panel, msata M4 256GB, Crucial M4 512GB SSD, Scorpio Black 750GB. Bios 1.38 Power Manager 6.64.1. Dell U3011 & 3007 wfp. Minidoc 3, 9&6 cell batteries. Problems: 1) 2h battery life. 2) DVDs unreadable after burning 3) two finger scrolling on trackpad is unusable. 4) mic is unusable for Skype 5) speakers are unusably quiet for films 6) battery drains by 10%/day when shutdown.

Re: Where is the optical/SPDIF/Stereo out on the W520?

You should've researched more before purchasing.

The 3.5 mm jack does stereo out for headphones/speakers, and if you have the special 3 ring jack on your headset, it will do mic in as well. You can get a splitter to split it into a stereo out and mic in. Other than that, there is no internal audio in/out. You can get a USB or Expresscard sound card or something, though.

I was looking at the Asonic External USB2.0 8 Channel Sound Card as it only costs £12.  But I havent found out if it supports  64bit windows 7 yet.  Anyone tried it?

a good quality usb sound card should have spdif out, so you just need to get one of those.

I also imagine that many people are using display port to HDMI adapters to recieve video along with sound.

Re: Where is the optical/SPDIF/Stereo out on the W520?

From what I see in the threads on DP to HDMI audio, there is no audio coming out of the DP only video.

I would be greatly pleased if the W520 has been upgraded to pass audio thru the DP to HDMI adapter.

You should be, as W520's DisplayPort does carry audio (and so does W510's). :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Where is the optical/SPDIF/Stereo out on the W520?

Spoiler

That is good news, since the initial comments said that Lenovo did not supply audio.
