You know, now that I look at it, I can't find a maximum resolution that high listed for the Fire GL 5700.  All I know is that is what my system was telling me it was putting out, and I have no way to verify it.

I was actually doing neither of those. I set it up so that only the external display is active, and the W500 screen was off.

No luck people!

I tried extending my screen, the max resolution was still 1680x1050.

I tried installing the latest ATI driver from the ATI website, that froze my machine after login! So, I had to use system restore to revert back.

I tried installing the Samsung245BW drivers available on the samsung website, the installer quits because it complains about how some file on teh CD-ROM is not present.

I tried unchecking the 'Hide modes that this monitor cannot display'. It still says that 1680x1050 is the highest resolution.

What am I missing? Can someone help?

Hi ice,

I Googled your monitor and found several people reporting being stuck at 1680x1050. Unfortunately there didn't seem to be consistent answer on how to get 1920x1200 native resolution on DVI. There were some suggestions on using ATI CCC, and settingt the refresh rate (which should be 60 Hz) before the resolution, not after. And some said to use VGA rather than DVI connection (which you could try, but that's hardly optimal). Anyway, here are the links, on the chance that something here helps you:

If you have access to a computer running a 32-bit OS, you might test your monitor with that. I think I saw a hint that the problem might be related to the 64-bit ATI driver.

There were other hints that the problem might be a bad EDID in your monitor, in which case you need to talk to Samsung...

Sorry, I've never had a monitor send me incorrect EDID information, but fmyhr seems to be correct on this one, and a quick search seems to show that some Samsung monitors show this problem.  Even and issue on Macs, so don't feel bad (A mac solution is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLlg-ofZTHs).  Apparently this program http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/ps.shtm called Powerstrip can override those settings, but as all of my monitors show correctly I can't test this.  Good luck!

I did a quick search also, and fmyhr is right. There are some issues with this monitor. I have a co-worker who has the same monitor which works fine. I have grabbed his EDID bits, and I will compare them to mine once I get home. I'll post again tonight with the results of my attempts.

Oh! and here is something I found from microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/display/edid_over.mspx Apparently this is a common enough problem faced by monitor manufacturers, that Microsoft has a white-paper on how to create a inf file to over-ride the EDID information.
