How can I add a hard drive to w520?
Did not find additional internal slot.
There is a carrier
ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III
(instead of DVD drive). Is it the only option?
Besides this slot connectors are different from common SATA. (6+7 pins instead of 7+15 pins). Any limitations on port speed?
During customization there is an option of RAID. Dvd drive on workstation is used often. It is silly to remove it completely.

Hi, Alex,
You have two options to add an internal second drive. One is to install an mSATA SSD into the slot under the keyboard. The other is to buy a caddy for a HDD or SSD, and pop it in where the DVD is now. The caddy internally has a standard pinout, and will take any SATA drive, II or III.
I took the second option, and have an external DVD connected to my mini-dock. I have the internal DVD in my carry bag, but rarely use it.
The caddy I like is:
I hope this helps.

There are many ways to add a second or third drive. USB 2.0, USB 3.0, Firewire, eSATA, eSATAp, across the wire with NAS, etc.
Most people prefer using the Ultrabay hard drive adaptor and a 2.5" HDD or SSD.

Need Help !!
Recently purchase W520 and purchsed the Ultra Bay caddy for second Hard drive.
Installed successfully. Disk management recognize but the Windows explorer doesn't recognize.
The second hard drive is for installing oracle applications. I don't intend to have a dual boot. i am happy with windows 7.
Do i need to format the Hard drive in the ultrabay caddy. and how should i do that...
Thanks in advance for help....

You've already been in Disk Management?
Right click My Computer and go to Manage and Local Storage.
Scroll down to you find the drive and Initialize it and then format.
It will show up in Windows now.
