w520 battery discharge issue - need some volunteers to test.

If anyone has time, could they conduct this test on their W520:

  1. Make sure the battery is 100% charged and on mains.
  2. shut down the machine completely
  3. disconnect the mains power.
  4. Wait 8 or more  hours.
  5. reconnect the mains power, and immediatly switch on & boot up the machine.
  6. It should still have 100% battery. However, mine drains at a raate of about 8% every 24h unless I discunnect the battery completely.  So after 12h, its usually already down to 96% or so.
  7. Post your battery % here.

Lenovo dont belive I have the problem, but it happens every time, and I even bought a second brand new lenovo battery, and it does the same thing.

It may be something to do with the fingerprint reader.  I even tried disabling the greed LED, but didnt help

Someone posted that they had the same problem with an older model, and that disconnecting and immiately reconnecting the battery helped, but it doesnt for me.

Thanks for your help!

Re: w520 battery discharge issue - need some volunteers to test.

I assume the precondition at step 1 is that the battery is also connected to the system, right?

And that between 3 and 4, the battery is still connected to the system, right?

Re: w520 battery discharge issue - need some volunteers to test.

There was a trick where you unplug/replug the battery after shutting the system off, and it would power off all remaining components.

This trick doesnt work for me on the W520, unfortunately.. It was reported as a workaround for the same problem occuring on a previous model (W510?)

Re: w520 battery discharge issue - need some volunteers to test.

I tried what you said, except at 70% instead of 100%, and 10 hours instead of 8. It read 70% when I shut it down, and 70% when I turned it back on.

thanks Colonel.  Do you have an integrated FPR?

Yes, but it's disabled in BIOS under Security > I/O Port Access. (I prefer typing my password.)

powercfg -devicequery wake_armed shows no devices either.

@eos,

When I was on the W520, I always put it into Hibernate but I never notice that the battery was draining despite putting it into hibernate mode for more than 8 hours.

Does yours happen only on shutdown or at hibernate also?

Re: w520 battery discharge issue - need some volunteers to test.

This is not just you!  I typically shutdown my w520, undock, bring it home, do not use it at home, put it back in the dock at work, power it up and see that I lost ~6% battery life per day.  Usually ~95% remaining if it was overnight and ~90% over a weekend, it was 82% this morning after a 3 day weekend.

USB power is off.  This is shut down, not suspended, not hibernating.
