I have a very basic network that consists of:
- Windows Vista Business
- Windows XP Professional
- Two computers with Windows XP Home Edition
When I try to use Remote Desktop to one of the other computers I receive the following message:
“This computer can’t connect to the remote computer”
How should i fix this?

Ensure Remote Desktop is enabled:
Windows Vista:
- Click Start
- Right click ‘Computer’
- Select ‘Properties’
- Click ‘Remote Settings’ in the upper right hand corner
- Ensure the option “Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)” is selected
Windows XP Professional
- Click ‘Start’
- Right click ‘My Computer’
- Select ‘Properties’
- Click the ‘Remote’ tab
- Ensure “Allow this computer to be controlled remotely” is selected
Windows XP Home Edition does not support Remote Desktop, meaning you will not be able to connect to a Windows XP Home Edition machine via a Remote Desktop Connection.
Another possibility would be your firewall may be blocking the ports for Remote Desktop to work correctly in the case of the Windows Firewall we can add an exception by:
- Open Control Panel
- Open Security Center
- Click Windows Firewall
- Ensure ‘Don’t Allow Exceptions” is not selected
- Click the ‘Exceptions’ tab
- Ensure there is a check mark in ‘Remote Desktop Connection’
