I just have done a new install of Windows XP Pro/sp3.
The search and companion is not functioning. It returns an error message that: unexpected error :action could be completed.
Turned off the indexing service (useing companion anyway). Same result.
I first tried this:
Start>Run>cmd [enter] [Command prompt opens]
regsvr32 jscript.dll [enter]
regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll [enter]
I got a successful result on each attempt.
But search is the same. No searching just error message.
Then I tried Windows\inf folder for the srchasst.inf file, right-click and choose Install. It asks me for the CD SP3, but when I insert that, it will not find the file msgr3en.dll on the disc. So it will not complete.
Any idea how to get the search working again.
Thanks
Carl

Thank you but that is the same as the earlier version of the Search 4.0
I really need the whole drive search, not the indexed files search, as I also add external drives to the search. Those will not be indexed, ever.
Thanks for trying, but this does not solve the problem of why the search returns the error message.

I got the XP Pro reinstall to work! Then I started adding my programs. Got about 1/3 through the process and then loaded Office 2007 with Word, Access and Excel only. Then I went to the update site. OH WHAT A LOT OF FILES! There were 1.3 gig of data to update! Yes I said GIG not meg. Took a very long time on my satellite connection, all night +, really. At 200 to 300 meg an hour........
Now my search will not work and I just do not know what to do about that. It returns an error message that: unexpected error :action could be completed. Also, external drives are grayed out and inaccessible under search.
Turned off the indexing service (using companion anyway). Same result.
I first tried this:
Start>Run>cmd [enter] [Command prompt opens]
regsvr32 jscript.dll [enter]
regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll [enter]
I got a successful result on each attempt.

Then I tried Windows\inf folder for the srchasst.inf file, right-click and choose Install. It asks me for the CD SP3, but when I insert that, it will not find the file msgr3en.dll on the disc. So that will not complete. So I pointed to the i386 folder on the hd and it worked. But the search gives the same error message.
Any idea how to get the search working again.

PS: this is a big deal for me as I need to attach other drives and search the folders and files on them. Cannot use the index service as they will not index.

Sorry for the incorrect posting. I thought the other thread was closed as this is a different problem and the original was solved.
Where is the move to?
Thanks

Hi Carl,
Both your threads have been combined here in this thread, not moved somewhere else - if I understand your question correctly.
This thread was not marked solved, and both your OPs seemed to refer to search failure after an XP reinstall, so it made sense to combine them. I just added the new post to this thread.
If you really think they should be separated, we can do so - but maybe it's best to just continue the conversation here?

Ran that and it did the scan, closed without comment.
Tried the search again and same result. BTW I am just trying to find *.gif so it is not complicated.
I am begining to think this must be something in office as there does not seem to be anything in windows that anyone can find.
Thanks for trying

Sure. Fine with me. Just want to be polite and follow the rules.
Hope I find an answer. Because if this keeps up, I will have to reinstall again and do a search before and after every change. That willl take me hundreds of hours........
I think it has something to do with either office or the massive update that MS made.
Thanks for the help, all
Carl
