Re: What's with everyone ragging on Vista?

hmmmmmmm.............let me first say that i did not face any hiccups intially with vista i must say that i just have 512mb of ram sis mirage graphics which does not support aero  user interface .but i must say i did not face any problems untill i installed avast anti virus was
encountered with the notorious BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH
other wise i give full kudos to vista i installed the following programs and it worked out pretty well
1.adobe reader 8.0
2.macromedia dreamweaver
3.ms office 2007 enterprise version
4.i got a 128 mb memory key with my system which was not enough for ready boost feature but have a good amount of memory before even thinking of running the eye candy vista thing

ps:::if u have an xp partition and u wanna run programs in vista without installing them just keep a shortcut to windows desktop in vista
the following programs were used without even installing.i just brought the shortcuts onto vista desktop
1.adobe reader8.0
2.macromedia dreamweaver
i used windows vista ultimate
ALSO I WANT TO MENTION THAT WITHOUT INSTALLING AN ANTI-VIRUS APP THERE WAS NOT EVEN A SINGLE VIRUS CODE FOUND IN MY VISTA DRIVE THIS MAY BE DUE TO
1.adress space layout randomisation
2.data execution prevention
3.code integrity check
4.kernel patch guard protection
5.clear distinction between normal and admin users!!

Re: What's with everyone ragging on Vista?

I started using it with no changes only the first few days that I had my new lenovo. After that the constant "are you sure?" drove me insane, and before destroying the computer I decided to turn it off. Besides that, it didn't seem to run that great, I mean, the fact that I didn't notice an improvement comparing to XP was already a disappointment, considering I upgraded my hardware (Lenovo K100 with 3GB of RAM), and when I uninstalled the antivirus that came with the computer and installed AVG, it stopped going to sleep normally, and then I couldn't even open My network. Finally, if you want a pretty interface, check out Linux, it's way nicer, that's why I started the switch, the aero effects are not so impressive anymore, that's why I also turned them off, otherwise the computer was TOO slow.

Re: What's with everyone ragging on Vista?

There are a few things I like about Vista.  I've been contemplating the switch to XP Pro, but I'm actually starting to like Vista and I'll try to see how long I can go without losing it completely.  It is slow on many tasks, that is definitely for sure.

But the things I like are:

  • All files and folders are tied to the profile, regardless of which partition or network drive you have the folder.  Even Apple's OS hasn't done this yet.
  • The networking on Vista is really great.  Accessing shared drives, and authenticating to network printers is usually very time consuming, and it is just excellent on Vista.  I'm saving time vs XP, where command line ping and ipconfig take up plenty of my time.  Vista is better at networking than Apple.
  • Transfer file settings when moving to a new machine worked flawlessly.  Outlook even had every account imported fully functioning

Some major dings though:

  • Slow
  • I just remapped some drives and now my profile no longer appears on C://users/profilex.  It is not there, but the profile still points to that location.  Really weird.

Re: What's with everyone ragging on Vista?

[ Edited ]
Having used Win 3.1, 95, ME, 98, and XP, I followed the announcement and debut of Vista.  I did not buy Vista because I knew there would be bugs galore and in typical MS fashion, the OS would not be ready for prime time right out of the chute.  More importantly, I knew MS would not tell the truth on minimum requirements to get Vista running FAST and EFFICIENTLY.

I was not alone or even smarter than others in my prediction, we all just knew how MS operates.

Turns out I was right in holding off.  Check out details of the class action lawsuit pending in Fed Court [sorry, I don't know if this site uses BB codes or what, but the links are below]::

Re: What's with everyone ragging on Vista?

I'm personally starting to love Vista.  Especially once I got Outlook fixed.

I'm in a small business environment without the resources for Exchange, and IIS servers, etc.  I come from many years of a Fortune 30 environment and appreciate the productivity tools that go with it.

Out of the box, Vista is already making me more productive in the small business environment.  The ease of networking trumps Apple and is making life easier over XP.  With just a simple NAS and router, we're collaborating with Vista and being productive.  No additional 3rd party software.  The links to commonly used folders and applications, and being a profile based app are making it easier to browse and search for files.  I love that everything is linked to my profile.  Web browsing is fast and stable on Vista, a much better experience for me over XP.

The file transfer program in control panel was unbelievably efficient.  It brought over some add-ins that was killing Outlook, but with some minor registry tweaks, I was able to solve it.

And windows meeting space is a gem.  I'm actually sitting here designing in CAD in real time and showing someone else in my small office what I want them to see, with each of us on our own screen.  And the ability to have multiple people work, live on editing the same document, real-time is also quite awesome.  There are actually productivity tools in Vista that are going to help my business' bottom-line.

And add to that, a laptop from Lenovo that has better audio than a macbook, and a webcam that is going to allow my company to do real-time product demos, evals and presentations using windows meeting space, I'm quite happy with the money spent.

Re: What's with everyone ragging on Vista?

[ Edited ]
My opinion - Microsoft is burying itself by its own hands.
They spent 4 or 5 years almost for NOTHING.

Sure the situation with Vista vs. XP looks like XP vs. 98 , but it's NOT the same. When XP came, everyone complained that it was slower then 98, but XP wasn't useless. It provided new great features and it was good-looking even after turning off all visual "bells and whistles" except themes. Networking was much easier than in 98, most security holes and workarounds of 98 were closed and all in all it wasn't SUCH expensive for it's all new features and abilities. Cost of additional 256 of RAM in 2001 was as much as 1 gig of ddr2 today, but now you also must build RAID to be sure everything will work without sssssttttoooooppppiiiings. Oh, and of course 256 flash rom for the ready boost. In XP if you had 512 ram and 1024 swap-file, you could tweak "DisablePagingExecutive" and work in OS, Internet and Office like you've got at least 1024 of RAM. This tip is not for Vista - it simply doesn't help even if you've got 2 gigs of ram!

XP was an OS that provided you an opportunity to work better even if the computer is slow with it. It was an instrument to use, but not to tune again and again when you just want to do simple things.

And what we've got now? A good-looking godzilla in 6 versions of it (some without hands, other - without skin), including all-in-all-and-you-can't-imagin-what-else-is-inside version with the cost of the low-level computer which is not good enough to use all features of monster but deals GREAT with XP!  The "are you sure" popup of UAC must be replaced by "aren't you stupid enough to handle your own computer?", because it's always meant by Microsoft that Vista is much smarter than user. Tons of checkboxes, questions, options, that are hard to find and not easy to understand until you know completely everything about it and even more or just brutforce options combinations to get the fine result! =)
It will be great for MS to improove WiFi networking interface instead of goddamned useless Aero. When I want to work in OS it means that I want to work, but not to watch a slowed cartoon about nice-closing-transparent windows. Soon we'll meet new great feature of MS - the closing window will blink, stretch, turn around, swap itself upside-down and of course play a beautifull melody before closing. And loading the system will be a SHOW, really. With fireworks, cheerleaders and two cups of coffee to wait until all features you've paid for are performed. Pop-corn and cola sales will grow up monstruosly when next MS OS is finished - we'll have to wait for hours for loading OS, super-great-drivers and e-mail agent with built-in functions of mediaplayer, defragmenter, security alerter (not defender - only alerter, defender only in SUPER-ULTIMATE version) and air freshener.

In two years nobody will think that Vista is bad - we will get used to it. But for now it's awfully unfriendly and horrorably hard to act with. Especially if remember the fact of money paid for that.

For me there aren't new features in Vista that I couldn't find in XP that force me to buy Vista for home.

Once I turn off all the Fisher-Price, My First OS effects, XP and Vista work equally well for me.  I can't tell the difference between it on this tablet and the T60p or HP Compaq nc6220 that are both running XP.  I don't have any apps, though, that are incompatible.

I'd put another 1GB of memory in there, though.

Theres a problem with disabling desktop compositiion where if you switch to Windows Classic, the video loses its VSync.

Re: What's with everyone ragging on Vista?

Here's how I think of it...

I just got my IdeaPad Y510-4 in the mail
Vista Home Premium idles at about 750MB when I first start up
It has 2048MB memory and 256MB discrete graphics

My old computer was a Gateway M520X
XP Pro idled at about 250MB
It had 480MB memory and 32MB integrated graphics

So, I now have 4.25 times the memory, but my OS idles 3 times faster. That still means that my new computer has about 42% more memory relative to the demands of the OS. Plus, if you know what features of Vista to switch off, you can slightly improve its performance. It only takes 60 seconds for my computer to boot up, and frankly that's not a problem at all. On top of that, I must say that Vista doesn't look too bad... I especially like the "translucent" edges of the windows.

I was a Vista nay-sayer at one time, but I have been turned around on this topic. Plus, for those of you gamers who are clinging to XP... guess what? I can play Halo 2 on my computer, and you can't.

Sorry, I just had to say that... :smileyhappy:

Re: What's with everyone ragging on Vista?

Vista did add so many better features.. just one example: installing a network printer.

Vista: Search for printer, select and click install.

XP: There is no built in way for discovery!  You have to manually add TCP/IP Ports, download drivers and install them.  Takes about 10 times as long and feels so 'old-way'.
