Windows Update Results in Randomly Shutting Off the Computer

[ Edited ]

Dear Friends,

In the last week, I downloaded and installed some recommended windows updates for my ThinkPad R50.  The process went smoothly, but ever since then, the computer will randomly shut off.   I tried going into Power Management and, at first, it was not even saving the settings when I tried to select the one that was configured to not turn off the machine.  Now, it has saved them, but it is ignoring them.  Of course, going to the Microsoft website is a worthless waste of time.   They tell you to select "Other" from a drop down menu if your problem isn't listed, but there is no "Other" on the drop down menu at the first level.  No matter what I try there, it just keeps sending me back to the same worthless page.

Please help.  It is important to me to have this computer running all of the time so that I can connect to it remotely and print, etc.

Re: Windows Update Results in Randomly Shutting Off the Computer

Hi Jamie

When you power on your computer this time, press F8 during the startup ,and select the "safe mode" option from the list . If you are able to log in into safe mode with your credentials, select the system restore option, select a date prior to the Windows update from the list. Let us know if this helps

Cheers and regards,

Re: Windows Update Results in Randomly Shutting Off the Computer

Thank you for the suggestion and I will try it tomorrow or the next day (I have my  car in the shop tomorrow, so I might not be able to get to the office tomorrow to deal with it).  You are very kind to help and I will let you know what happens.  Again, I very much appreciate your willingness to assist me.

Re: Windows Update Results in Randomly Shutting Off the Computer

I managed to get to the office today and I tried several times to get it to do a system restore, and to no avail.  It just kept saying that it could not be done.  :-(

And, it has turned itself off again this evening.  If you have any other ideas, I'm happy to try them, too.

Thanks again.

Jamie

Were you able to go into the safe mode?

If system restore option does not work, try using the"last known good configuration" from the safe mode menu

Re: Windows Update Results in Randomly Shutting Off the Computer

Okay, I will.  I'm working from home again today, but I will be in the office tomorrow (Friday, U.S. Central time) and will give it a try then.  Thanks again for your patient assistance.
