Color on X201 tablet

I _just_ bought a new X201 tablet, and am very happy with it, except that the screen color is very yellowish or orangish. Green trees look brown, blue skies look grey. I tried both calibrating through Color Management in the Control Panel and endless adjustments in Intel's Control Center. It's as if there's just very little blue in the screen--a mechanical issue.

Mind you, it's crisp and clear; it just makes everything look like a photo taken under incandescent light with a camera set for daylight..

Anyone else?

Re: Color on X201 tablet

I've never seen that with a brand new machine, but it does tend to happen with IPS screens after a while - i.e. backlight wear.

So the question is - do you see this color shift even in the BIOS screen? If so, you'll need to have it fixed under warranty.

Re: Color on X201 tablet

Yes, I should have said. I got the machine on Monday and let the problem go until Friday because I was somewhat fooled by what I saw at boot-up. At boot-up, before the color profile is loaded, the shift seemed less pronounced, but I realized today that was just because the color was so desaturated. By good fortune, the blurry Windows 7 logo has several colors which I can compare across computers, and the blue is definitely pale.

Just out of curiosity, Ivan, can you explain about the IPS screen? How long is "a while?" If "a while" is less than two years, that may be a problem. (I rotate each laptop I buy to a secondary, back-up status after two years, and give it away after four--so my old X61 is about to go to a good cause.)

Re: Color on X201 tablet

I've seen a lot of X61 tablets develop this issue after 2-2.5 years of HEAVY use. I've actually been getting a bunch of them services for this particular issue as of late. What happens is the screen turns yellow and the back light becomes dim.

Well, the BIOS screen background is blue. You should be able to see any anomaly there easily.

If you do see it in the BIOS, get Lenovo to replace the screen for you. It has to be a hardware issue.

Re: Color on X201 tablet

Thanks. the BIOS background is greyish blue, with a tint almost of olive green. Sort of a dirty aqua. Sorry, I thought you meant the splash screen shown during the boot-up into Windows.

I've been asking around the New Urbanist community, and there's another person with the problem. Also, I saw that an early review of the X201 tablet had that complaint--too much yellow/orange. Maybe toward the end of the x201's life they're going back to some old stock of screens. I've toyed with trying to return it and waiting for the X220 tablet, but that has a 768-pixel wide screen in tablet mode, As a matter of fact, I purposefully bought the X201 tablet and 6 gigabytes of RAM just so that I could have some measure of the X220's speed without having to ditch a couple of programs. I thought "oh no, I can't live with that letterbox screen, I'd better act fast"

No need for speculation, though. Thanks for the help.

Re: Color on X201 tablet

Sounds like you need to get the screen replaced then.

I doubt it's "old stock" - it's probably just defective.

Re: Color on X201 tablet

Just a follow-up . . .

I sent in the computer, but the description the technical support gave apparently wasn't good enough for the technician. I gave my own description on the repair form and inserted a typed-up set of instructions as to how to see the problem. However, as long as the screen passes the diagnostic suite test--level 2 cache etc.--they deem the computer repaired. Color isn't something they look for.

So I'm returning it. It's a terrible pity, too. I liked it a lot, but the technician couldn't repair it, and my 21 days to return it are almost up. Thanks again.

Re: Color on X201 tablet

See this early review:

I know someone who got an X201 tablet in mid-summer, and was happy with the color--though I didn't see it myself. She works with photos, so I imagine she didn't get the yellowish display.

Re: Color on X201 tablet

Hi bro,

I have found the Solution finally, the real problem is graphics driver.:smileyhappy:

I own ThinkPad 410 and x 201 as well. In both I had the same yellowish color issue. Now both work  fine.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?doctypeind=9&template=%2Fproductselection%2Fla...

Go to this link, choose your laptop and download the graphics driver  (either Nvidia or Intel HD Graphics)  and install it. Restart Your computer. That's all. Be happy and have a coffee. :smileyhappy:  Your problem  Solved.

 Good luck!!!

 Smiles,

 Chandra
