x61 not recognizing battery

The AC cord was yanked out of the base with the computer charging.  Now the computer won't recognize the battery at all.

so does the power manager show that the battery is plugged in?

No, the power manager shows no battery.  The only way the computer works is plugged in.  So far I've tried shutting down and removing the battery, checking the connections and replacing it.
