i found a workaround on my linux x220, basically there is a noise setting in the synaptics driver that filters electrical noise from the touchpad, as far as i understand, the noise comming from the x220 touchpad is greater than normal hence the jumpiness
there's 2 ways to set it, the first with synclient (man synclient and run it without options would list all) and the Horiz/VertHysteresis settings, this one didnt work for me because i dont have those 2 variables in synclient, but listing for posterity in case this would work on some other linux distro
the second one which did work - you need to list your input devices in X:
$ xinput list
⎜ ↳ SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=10 [slave pointer (2)]
$ xinput list-props "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
Synaptics Noise Cancellation (288): 6, 6
- that 6,6 setting is too low, upping it to 24,24 or 32,32 or even 64,64 will fix it, try lower values first because the higher you go, when moving the finger on the touchpad the mouse pointer wont move as smoothly (seems like its jumping pixels)
$ xinput --set-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" 288 24, 24
you need to run the commands as the regular desktop user since they need to access the X server connection
i dont use windows so i have no idea how to workaround it there, i imagine there might be a similar setting in the advanced driver settings
this is still a workaround and not a fix since it affects mouse pointer movement, i think i would have a hard time doing simple design fixes in gimp for eg with the touchpad, something i was able to do when this didnt happen

this is your friendly weekly bump in the hopes of some progress.
My support call has now progressed to testing the following:
upgrade bios - already on latest
Disable trackpoint when using external screen - no difference
disable trackpoint in bios - no difference
uninstall multi-touch - clarifying if mouse or touchscreen (i'm on an x220t)
fingers crossed for some news from engineering one of these days

Man, the X220 is dang near at the end of it's life and this is STILL a problem? I wonder if the X230 will come out with the same problem...![]()

Still nothing as per usual?

My support case now need the laptop sending back to the depot for inspection. Not sure i can do that as i can't get a spare from work...
It's annoying seeing as engineering seem to have replicated the issue internaly too

Seems like they're just trying to buy more time...EVERY SINGLE X220 I've tried out has this EXACT same problem...

@18bravo could it be location related? if every x220 would have this issue i'm sure there would be many more complaints, maybe its something related to the power and where we are.. i know the issue is from "touchpad noise" that the touchpad sends to the system, filtering that out fixes it but also degrades its performance for fine movements, like someone stated a while ago touching some of the metal parts of the case also fixes while touching it, running on battery also fixes it
would worth testing out your system in a different location and see what happens, if possible
another thing i've noticed but i'm not 100% sure about, is related to suspending to ram often, might cause it but like i said, really not sure if its related yet

Hello all,
I have a ThinkPad X1 with core i7, 8GB. I have the same problem when I am using the ultra slim charger 90W, (the fancy one) the touchpad goes crazy, unusable, and the laptop makes a noise.
I called the Lenovo´s support from Spain and they told me: The ultra slim charger 90W IS NOT COMPATIBLE with the ThinkPad X1. I can not return it because I bought it by online, Lenovo web site.

@amorcillo That's interesting. I just went to lenovo.com and shopped for an X1 with your specs and took the following screen shot that clearly shows that the Lenovo 90W Ultraslim AC/DC Combo Adapter is being offered as an option. I'm thinking that because there aren't hundreds of other options on that page, that the options that are on that page are "compatible" options.
