Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software II for Windows 7 6.4.0.1500 22 Mar 2011 (MIGR-76986), listed as current in Drivers and software - ThinkPad X220, has a problem in that it installs a Tray Helper app in the Startup folder which always sounds an error beep when started.
I got fed up and reverted back to ThinkPad Bluetooth 2.1 with Enhanced Data Rate Software II 6.2.1.1200 01/12/2010 (factory install).

hey JNavas,
have you tried uninstalling all Bluetooth drivers first before installing the newest version ? If you have not, could you do so and do tell us if the same issue occurs.
STARTING POINT:
* Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1, 64-bit
* No Bluetooth software installed in Control Panel
* Device Manager shows
ThinkPad Bluetooth 2.1 with Enhanced Data Rate II
Driver Provider: Broadcom
Driver Date: 01/12/2010
Driver Version: 6.2.1.1200
Driver Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher
* Bluetooth devices installed:
Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000
PROCESS:
1. Remove Bluetooth mouse
2. Uninstall ThinkPad Bluetooth 2.1 with Enhanced Data Rate II
(without deleting driver software)
3. Downloaded and tried to install:
Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software II for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad
from MIGR-76986 (because System Update did NOT offer to install it)
4. Install failed due to "No Bluetooth device was detected"
(Bluetooth radio light was on, Fn+F5 shows Bluetooth radio on)
5. Used Fn+F5 to turn off Bluetooth radio and then turn it back on, whereupon install resumed and completed.
6. Restarted system
7. ERROR BEEP ISSUE AT SYSTEM STARTUP! Cause is
"C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\Bluetooth Software\BTTray.exe"
installed in Startup folder -- if I remove it, issue does not occur
Does not appear to be needed in any event -- Bluetooth icon appears in System Tray without it
8. Used Bluetooth icon in System Tray to add the Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000
9. Device Manager now shows
ThinkPad Bluetooth 3.0
Driver Provider: Broadcom Corporation
Driver Date: 12/16/2010
Driver Version: 6.4.0.1201
Driver Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher
SUMMARY OF PRIMARY ISSUES:
1. System Update does not offer to install -- must be manually downloaded and installed
2. Does not detect Bluetooth hardware during install unless radio turned off and back on
3. Error beep at every system startup due to BTTray.exe installed in Startup folder
OTHER ISSUES:
1. Uninstall of MIGR-76986 does NOT uninstall drivers -- Device Manager still shows
ThinkPad Bluetooth 3.0
Driver Provider: Broadcom Corporation
Driver Date: 12/16/2010
Driver Version: 6.4.0.1201
Driver Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher
Must Roll Back Driver or install driver and delete to revert to prior version
2. Does NOT install Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 reliably
Multiple install attempts end in success report from software, but mouse stays in pairing mode,
and mouse entry later disappears from Bluetooth devices, a SERIOUS issue
This also happens with the prior driver version -- only work-around I have found is to (again)
turn Bluetooth radio off and then back on
MY CURRENT STATUS
Reverted to prior version of Bluetooth (Driver Version: 6.2.1.1200), mouse working properly

FWIW, the previous version of the BT driver is actually 6.2.1.3100 dated 4 Apr 2011

I'm having the exact same issue with my X1 laptop. Error beep on startup with no Lenovo BT icon in sys tray or icon in control panel. I do have the Windows7 Pro icon in the system tray and BT is functioning with my BT mouse. I've disable the line referring to the bbtray.exe in startup using msconfig and I no longer get the annoying beep on startup. Tried uninstalling 6.4.0.150 and reinstalling, but the problem remains, annoying beep on startup and no BT icons.

Hi Bill,
Driver versions do not match software release versions, which is confusing.
MIGR-76986 (7zwb01ww), the subject of my bug report, is software release version 6.4.0.1500, driver version 6.4.0.1201. This is the initial release of ThinkPad Bluetooth 3.0 for the ThinkPad X220, and it exhibits the error beep issue.
Software release version 6.2.1.3100 (2011/04/04) is actually MIGR-70042 (7zbv19ww), driver version 6.3.5.430 (04-08-2010). This release does not support the ThinkPad X220. It can be installed nonetheless, and does not exhibit the error beep issue.
The "prior version" on my system is driver version 6.2.1.1200.
Hope that helps,
John

Again FWIW..... I checked the config on my X220 last night, which is pretty much the same as your but has no webcam, and I have 6.4.0.1201 installed on my X220 and I am not experiencing any error beeps or usage problems with it.
The driver version number not matching the driver package release number is a common issue right across the industry..... wish as we may that it will change, I don't see that happening any time soon.
Cheers,
Bill

Do you have "ThinkPad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software" installed in Control Panel, and do you have BTTray.exe installed in your Startup folder? This is what causes the error beep issue, not the driver.

In the case of IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads, driver version number usually matches the package. Case in point: MIGR-66898. (Other companies are irrelevant in this context.)

Yes to both.
As far as numbering goes..... the IBM and Lenovo numbers for the ThinkPad release packages which rely on third party developed drivers have usually followed the relevant driver vendor's numbering scheme, and there have been many instances where the driver vendor concerned has differing version numbering between the package and the driver.
