Ok now, there is tablet editions of Windows OS. Is it okay to install the normal ones, sufficient drivers / software on the IBM site?
Initially I was going to get the X61 (non tablet) but that was not available and the X61T was so much cheaper, I got it for around $350US. 4GB RAM installed with the base unit and a DVD reader / CD Writer. I may sell off the base and the drive though. Is the X61T that much larger and heavier?

the x61t is only slightly thicker than a regular x61. Regarding the Vista and Win 7 have native support tablets, only have an edition especially made for the Tablet pc.

would i have all the functions by installing a standard version of Windows and installing the driver / software from the IBM site?

if you use normal XP pro then you would have problem using the tablet feature.
