Compatible hard drives for X61?

Greetings all!

I'm curious if the X61 is "locked down" to use specific hard drive models as specified in this link:

Is this really the case? Only original Lenovo hard drives are compatible with the X61?

I recall using a Seagate hard drive on my T43, and every time it booted up it gave a message stating that this hard drive is not supported on this system. I changed a setting in BIOS, so the boot process continued after showing the warning a couple of seconds. Even so, I would like to make sure that I can actually use the hard drive of my choice (Seagate ST910021AS) on my X61.

No, you can use any currently available 2.5" SATA drive.  However, the drive will not be covered by any warranty that may apply to your ThinkPad, so you might want to keep the original drive in case you need warranty service on your X61 in the future

I am personally running a Seagate 120GB 2.5" 7200rpm SATA drive in my X61 without any problems.

Thanks for your reply. Seagate disks it is, then They're about 1/5 the price of original Lenovo disks, so this is indeed good news.

And thanks for your advice on keeping the original disk, this might come in handy in the future

I have a T43p and recently purchased a seagate hard drive and it is not recognized. What exactly did you with yours to get it to work?

Welcome to the forum, mrfed

T43/p and R52 series ThinkPads are very picky about the drives they'll work with. Long story that has to do with their SATA bridge...

What Seagate drive have you installed? 

Are you getting the "2010 error" or is the machine not seeing the drive at all?
