Confused about X61s batteries.

I just ordered an X61s Notebook with the "4 cell Enhanced Capacity Battery" -- my Order Status sheet shows "41W1829 SBB 4 cell Li-Ion battery 2.6AH".

The Lenovo web site "X61's Spec Page" shows two Li-Ion batteries for my machine, a "4-cell prismatic" and a "4-cell cylindrical". I have no clue as to the difference.

When customizing and buying my Notebook at the web site, only a 4 cell enhanced and an 8 cell enhanced were options.

So what battery do I have, is the "41W1829 SBB" battery an "enhanced" battery? I can't find that model number anywhere on the Lenovo site.

Also, what real-life experience has anyone had with this 4-cell battery. Do I need to buy a second 'stand-by' 4-cell one, or should I change to the 8-cell battery, if I can?

Thanks all.

Re: Confused about X61s batteries.

sinc, welcome to the forum,

There are 4 different batteries for the X61s, only 3 for the X61.
As follows;
a) 40Y6999 4 cell Prismatic (cannot be used with X61)
b) 40Y7001 4 cell Cylindrical
c) 40Y7003 8 cell High Capacity
d) 40Y7005 Extended Life

I have used the option numbers and not manufacturing numbers, (you quote a manufacturing number which is also different to an FRU number).

It has to do with the battery life, the cylindrical is more powerfull than the prismatic. The prismatic cannot be used with the X61 because the X61 doesn't have the low voltage CPUs and would be too weak.

You can compare the stats on this site

Hopefully that explains it.

Andy

Hi Andy,

Nice of you to put it together like this. Question for you (or anyone with direct experience in the matter).

What is the difference between the 8-cell and the "extended life" batteries? ... in terms of battery life, of course... Presently I'm able to squeeze out about 7hrs 45minutes out of the 8-cell battery on my X61 (with about 20-30minutes of wifi thrown in), with brightness level turned down to 2 (it's plenty enough to see what's on the screen as well) - using XP Sp3.

Would the "extended life battery be an even better performer?

Thanks!
Steve

** EDIT **

Whoops! Never mind... I didn't see the link you provided  -- all makes sense now.

Re: Confused about X61s batteries.

The extended life is a 4 cell battery and should add 4 hours of life, (realisticly probably 3). Using it in conjunction with the 8 cell you're talking a full working day on battery, maybe 10-11 hours. BUT, (there's always one of those somewhere :smileywink: ), as it attaches to the bottom of the X6* and uses the docking port you cannot use it with the X6* Ultrabase, one of them has to go! :smileysurprised:

Re: Confused about X61s batteries.

Thanks all, I appreciate the information. You can see it's a tad confusing, what with first noticing "prismatic" & "cylindrical" jargon on the X61s spec. sheet, however my web order printed "4 cell enhanced capacity" and a day later the final "Order Status" page listed a "41W1829" part number (which I couldn't locate at the Lenovo site) with description "SBB 4 cell Li-Ion Battery 2.6AH".

It wasn't quickly apparent exactly which battery was being shipped. Thanks much for the link to the "X60 Battery Options" page, so I see have the battery I want. It's still not crystal clear to me how the "slim line" 4-cell battery varies from the 4-cell "enhanced", I guess one is physically smaller as well as less capacity, does that make sense?

I don't have the energy to track down pictures of them, and I couldn't find anything quickly. This is my first ThinkPad, I've always wanted one after years of Dell Notebooks -- but I never had any confusion at the Dell site.

Apple isn't much more detailed at their site -- I really wanted an "Air" but refused to buy a Notebook with a built-in battery, no matter how pretty it is! Thanks again all.
