Password for MEBx Login on new ThinkPad X230 laptop?

Hi there,

My new ThinkPad X230 arrived today. While exploring the system, I noticed that I don't know the password for the MEBx Login, which I am accessing by pressing CTRL-p at system startup.

I don't recall setting this at all today. If I did, it would have been while playing with the Lenovo/Intel programs when I was logged into Windows 7, and I would have set the password to blank (empty password field). But an empty password field isn't working in the MEBx Login.

What is the password, and how can I reset it?

I cannot access the "Intel (R) ME General Settings" or "Intel (R) AMT Configuration" menu items, as they seem to e

I saw in another forum post for a T series ThinkPad that the default password is "admin": this is not the case for my system.

Thanks,

mosno.

Typo: that second-last paragraph should read:

I cannot access the "Intel (R) ME General Settings" or "Intel (R) AMT Configuration" menu items, as they seem to be disabled.

Re: Password for MEBx Login on new ThinkPad X230 laptop?

Good Morning,

I would try the following link: http://support.lenovo.com/en_GB/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT003903

You may use CTRL+P to enter the Intel AMT 2 Management Engine BIOS Extensions (MEBX) screen and do not remember the correct password to enter the MEBX interface. The default password ("admin") does not work.

Solution

If you lose or corrupt the Intel AMT 2 Management Engine BIOS Extensions (MEBX) password, it can be reset by the following steps:

  1. Unplug the system from electrical outlets.
  2. Open the system cover.
  3. Remove the CMOS battery (CR2032).

remove the CMOS battery

  1. Wait for the system charge to drain (approximately 5 minutes).
  2. Reinstall the CMOS battery.

reinstall the CMOS battery

  1. Replace the system cover.
  2. Connect system power and turn the system on.
  3. Enter the MEBX configuration screens by pressing CTRL+P when prompted.
  4. Administrator password should be reset to "admin".

I hope this helps.

Re: Password for MEBx Login on new ThinkPad X230 laptop?

Thanks Serge.

I looked at my laptop's documentation and there is indeed a documented method for removing the "backup" battery.

However, I will not attempt this as the laptop is unsatisfactory for other reasons, and I am in the process of returning it to Lenovo to claim the 14 day risk-free return..
