Help please have lost forgotten password for my much loved "x60", had been away from home awhile unable to restart on return. What to do to get operating again, I'd just bought Samsung SSD to install give it a new lease of life.

Hey Paddy,
You can try the steps in the below link:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?Legacy
But as lead_org has said if you have set a HDD password or BIOS password in most cases you need to have the system board replaced. You can find on the internet other tips to help you but we have guidelines that do not allow us to post any steps that undermine or bypass any security measures.
Best Regards,
Hiro

Thanks folks mistake on my part I see now its XP Pro " Windows user" password that I've lost, is that easier or not to recover?

It is. Start by using a tool by the name of Google
e.g. http://www.google.com/search?q=recover+windows+xp+
You'll find several ways to recover the password depending on what you have on hand like Windows XP CDs, etc.

Thanks X60 is 2nd hand to me I've no CD's, I'l check Google see what I can come up with. Been using X31 happily for 4-5 years X60 a major and welcome step up, hope I can get it working again.

Hey Paddy,
Did you try any of these steps from Microsoft?

I would suggest you do and please post back if you have any issues or questions.
Best Regards,
Hiro

Well...on the brighter side...at least from my perspective:
With that nice SSD, you should go for either W7 or Linux. XP is really not SSD-friendly without major tweaks.
The fastest booting machine in my household is a non-ThinkPad from the same era as your X60, comparable size and specs, running Linux Mint on a Crucial C300 SSD...it's ridiculously fast for a 5-year-old unit.

Hi George and all other's who have offered help advice thanks, as I'm fairly incompetent in the internal workings of PC's etc think perhaps I need a younger more PC knowledgeable brain to sort for me! You saw an update to 7 is best way to utilize new SSD.
